2019 SUMMER ACADEMY
cq-text-component-placeholder

CINSAM (Northern Kentucky University’s Center for Integrative Natural Science and Mathematics) together with three NKU Colleges are offering Summer Academies designed specifically for High-School students looking to deepen their content knowledge, prepare for future classes and bolster their resume in preparation for college applications.  Academies are a way to make like-minded friends and have fun while exploring concepts that are beyond the lessons taught in most high-school classrooms.

Whether working in the College of Informatics’ cutting edge Cyber-Security lab, operating sophisticated scientific equipment or isolating chemical compounds to solve forensic mysteries; these summer academies will expose you to high-level subjects and experiences. Our academies will challenge you to use critical thinking and teamwork, while having fun and exploring topics that you love!

Student Requirements

  • High school students ( rising 9th -12th graders) graduating between 2020 and 2023.
  • Students must have a passion and enthusiasm for STEM concepts.
  • Students are encouraged (but not required) to ask a teacher or mentor to submit a short letter of recommendation to cinsam@nku.edu

2019 CINSAM Academy Descriptions

NKU BRAIN (Best Research Academy In Neuroscience)
June 10th-14th

Times:     12pm-4pm

Cost:       $150
Grades:    Rising 9th-12th graders
Location:  NKU Founders Hall

Can your cell phone give you a headache? Can taking a walk make you more creative? How can you prevent test anxiety? NKU BRAIN (Best Research Academy In Neuroscience) will provide opportunities for high school students to conduct experiments on the brain and behavior that are directly relevant to their personal lives. Participants will get hands on experience dissecting and quantifying differences in animal brains from fruit flies to humans. They will also use NKU’s Neuroscience teaching and research labs to develop and conduct neurochemistry, neuroanatomy and neurobehavior experiments under the supervision of the NKU Director of Neuroscience.

Engineering & Technology; Design and Build Academy
June 17th- 21st

Times:     9am-4pm

Cost:       $300
Grades:    Rising 9th- 12th graders
Location:  Business Academy Center

This summer academy consists of a full week of engineering related activities.  Some of the activities are: Learning about microprocessors and how to program one, using a parametric modeling software such as Solidworks and/or Inventor, design and build a part using NKUs’ Rapid Prototype machines.  Work with Robots, get familiar with basic manufacturing additive concepts, such as welding.  Create name tags using Laser cutting and Computer Numerical Control Machines, build bridge trusses.  Participants will also tour Toyota Georgetown plant and other local industries such as Mazak.

Computer Science Academy
June 24th-28th

Times:     9am-1pm

Cost:       $150
Grades:    Rising 9th- 12th graders
Location:  Griffin Hall

The CS Academy will present different topics in CS (e.g., security, IT, programming) through hands-on activities with NKU Professors.  Each day will present a different topic and activity.  The camp will close out on Friday with a focus on careers in IT put on by Kroger Technology’s cybersecurity team! By the end of this academy, participants will have learned about IT as an area of study and as a potential careers!

Chemistry Academy: Chemical Synthesis and Reactions in Pharmaceuticals
June 24th-28th

Times:     12pm-4pm

Cost:       $150
Grades:    Rising 9th- 12th graders
Location:  NKU Science Center

Learn how the many faces of chemistry (organic, analytical, materials, biochemistry) are involved in drug design and medicinal research. This camp will expose to various synthetic, purification, and identification techniques that are routinely used in drug design. Students will carry out a variety of experiments and use research instrumentation (Scanning Electron Microscope, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, IR-Spectrometer ) to characterize  and analyze molecules. Current undergraduate students and NKU faculty will share their research endeavors as they relate to medicinal chemistry and drug design.

SPONSORS

Scholarships
: CINSAM Summer Camp fees remain low due in large part to sponsorship from Ashland. Additionally, this sponsorship allows CINSAM to offer scholarships to low-income students who meet the requirements for the "Free & Reduced Meal" programs in KY, IN and OH. Parents have the option to apply for a scholarship on the registration form.
