2019 Camp Descriptions

Monkeying Around- Primatology Camp
June 10th-14th

Times:     9 am – 12 noon
Cost:       $105
Grades:    Rising 7th - 9th Graders
Location:  NKU Science Center & Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden

Standard registration deadline is May 14th. Deadline for late registration May 28th.

Monkeying Around provides campers with unique opportunities to learn about and study non-human primates.  The camp is hands-on, with active learning activities both on campus and at the zoo.  There are two main goals of the program: learning about primates in general and becoming aware of conservation activities related to endangered primate species.  These two goals are met by teaching the students the differences between the different types of primates (why they aren’t all monkeys!)  Introducing them to the daily lives of primates with regards to social behavior, diet, and ecology.  This introduction will prepare them to study living primates at the zoo, create hypotheses about the animals, and analyze data they collect themselves.  Finally, we round out the week learning about endangered species and conservation efforts as well as what actions campers can take to help alleviate some of the stress on these animals in the wild.

NOTE: On Tuesday and Thursday, parents will drop off and pick up campers at the Cincinnati Zoo.

Astronomy Camp
June 10th-14th

Times:     12 noon – 4 pm

Cost:       $140
Grades:    Rising 6th - 8th Graders
Location:  NKU Science Center and Haile Digital Planetarium
Standard registration deadline is May 14th. Deadline for late registration May 28th.

Astronomy Camp at NKU introduces middle school students to the solar system and beyond through the use of planetarium shows, hands-on activities, personal control of the planetarium via Kinect, and daytime/nighttime telescope observations (weather permitting). Topics covered include observational astronomy, the sun, planets, asteroids, meteorites, comets, star formation, stellar lifecycles, stellar explosions, galaxies, exoplanets, and large scale structure of the universe. Campers will prepare mini-shows throughout the week and present them at our open house on Friday evening to each other, their guests, and the general public.

NOTE: There will be an optional/additional evening session for telescope viewing.

Cybersecurity is for Everyone!

Grades:    Rising 4th - 6th Graders
Location:  Griffin Hall
Standard registration deadline is May 20th. Deadline for late registration June 3rd.

This camp provides an overview of cybersecurity principles with fun hands-on activities for students. Each activity is designed to cover cybersecurity basics such as learning how computers work, how they talk to each other over a network, best practices for being safe online and how to identify dangerous content such as viruses and other types of malware. After completing the camp, students will walk away with knowledge about protecting themselves online through a better understanding of cybersecurity’s importance in our digital world.

Save the Penguins
June 24th-28th

Times:     9 am – 12 noon

Cost:       $105
Grades:    Rising 5th - 7th Graders
Location:  NKU Science Center
Standard registration deadline is May 27th. Deadline for late registration June 10th.

This camp is designed to help middle grades students learn about science concepts related to heat and energy as well as teach them the basics of engineering design. They will come away with a sense of how engineers are people who design solutions to problems. The students’ goal is to design and build a shelter for a penguin shaped ice cube that reduces heat transfer and keeps the ice from melting. They will conduct a variety of hands on investigations and experiments dealing with heat and temperature leading up to the engineering challenge of building a penguin house.
