English 101 teaches the writing process - from invention and prewriting to drafting and revising editing the final copy - and provides students with oppotunities to recognize and develop their own process. English 101 rests on the foundation that writers need to understand their target audience during the creation of their work. When students understand their audience, the course will guide them on how to write with a specific purpose for that audience.
In order to grasp the concept of audience, students will be taken through a series of readings (which may be written, digital, or visual) that are meant for a wide range of communities, audiences, and groups. Many of these groups may even be people students interact and communicate with on a daily basis but have no knowledge on beyond the surface. Due to this fact, students will learn unique skills that will continue to be as useful beyond the classroom as they are within it. With an informed perspective on many audiences, students will practice writing coherent pieces with distinct purposes to a wide variety of audiences.
All sections of ENG 101 will entail approximatley 10-15 pages of reading, 4-5 major writing assignments throughout the semester, and 5-6 hours of work outside the class each week.
