What is the Future Leaders Internship Program?
Future Leaders Internship Program (FLIP) fellows are placed with a Northern Kentucky legislator as they serve in the General Assembly and will spend Tuesdays and Thursdays during spring semester in Frankfort*. This is an amazing internship opportunity to learn about power politics across all industries while developing critical professional skills through networking, research, and communication. This opportunity is not available in any classroom.
GET EXPERIENCE
There has never been a more important time for college students to gain necessary work experience before competing in what is becoming a super-competitive, global job market. Students who intern or co-op provide themselves opportunities to apply what they learn in the classroom and put it into practice at work.
Hannah Edelen

"I had the opportunity to work for Kentucky State Senator Chris McDaniel during the 2018 Legislative Budget Session. During this experience, I expanded my network, learned more about the state’s legislative process and found purpose assisting the office with various tasks. I credit this program for my continued work in public service here in Kentucky and for the opportunity I had to serve in Washington D.C. under the leadership of Congressman Guthrie."

Travis Roy

"The FLIP internship provided me with so much more than just an in-class experience about politics. Being an intern in Frankfort, you truly get a first-hand experience of how state government works and the processes that go into creating and passing legislation. The connections and resources that the internship provide cannot be found in any other classroom setting. Participating in the FLIP program changed the trajectory of my college experience, and I became a better college student because of it."

Brynn Cahal

"The FLIP program helped me learn firsthand how state government works. It was interesting and eye-opening to see how changes were made in our Commonwealth. I gained many skills during the internship that will benefit me in other internships and in my future career."

Jack Flesch

"FLIP is a great opportunity for NKU students to learn about the state’s legislative process, meet like-minded individuals and grow personally. During the 2019 Legislative Session,  I was lucky enough to intern with a dynamic, engaging senator and his office. I intend to hold onto the lessons, ideas and relationships from FLIP in the future."

Michelle Adams

"I really enjoyed the FLIP internship because I loved going to the Capitol and experiencing Frankfort to its fullest extent. I was fortunate to be a part of a hands-on role in politics and observe our state government. My favorite part about FLIP was going to the meetings and getting to know my senator. Having a connection with the person who represents you in the policy making process is outstanding."
