Certification of Major

Students majoring in French, German, Japanese, or Spanish must have their major certified prior to graduation by the chair of the Department of World Languages and Literatures or a designated representative.

For summer and fall graduation, certification must be completed no later than April 22 of the preceding spring semester or a late fee will be charged.

For spring graduation, the deadline for certification is November 30 of the preceding fall semester or a late fee will be charged.

Students must also file an Application for Degree Candidacy form with the Office of the Registrar according to this same schedule. Check the university calendar to verify the Registrar's exact deadlines. 

To begin the certification process, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish majors should download a Program Certification form from the Office of the Registrar and then schedule a meeting with the chair of the Department of World Languages and Literatures or a designated representative. 

During the meeting, the certification form will be checked to see that all requirements for a Bachelor's Degree in French, German or Spanish  have been or will be met. If the form is satisfactory, it will be signed by both the chair and the student.

The student should also have completed or be currently enrolled in WLL 400 in order to submit the departmental assessment portfolio. 

French, German, Japanese, and Spanish majors will then be asked to fill out an evaluation of the program they will be completing. The evaluation gives faculty members information on the quality of their curriculum, advising, teaching and extracurricular activities. This information will be used to help maintain or enhance the character of the French, German and Spanish programs at NKU.
