Mike Hales joined Northern Kentucky University as Chief Financial Officer (CFO) in August 2015. He provides leadership, management, and policy advice on all strategic and tactical matters pertaining to the fiscal operations and financial management of the University. As CFO, he serves as the Treasurer for the University and the NKU Research Foundation. He also oversees the University Budget Office and Office of the Comptroller.
Mike came to NKU with more than 25 years of financial experience at The E.W. Scripps Company, a $900 million revenue media company headquartered in Cincinnati. His progressive leadership roles over the course of his career have covered a wide range of responsibilities, including budget, audit, accounting, compliance, purchasing, and financial planning and analysis.
At The E.W. Scripps Company, Mike most recently served as the Vice President for Finance, Newspaper Division, with revenues of nearly $400 million. In this role, he was responsible for the annual newspaper division operating budget, centralized newspaper financial planning & analysis and newspaper accounting operations.
Mike began his professional career in audit with the Cincinnati office of Ernst & Young.
A native of northern Kentucky, Mike is a proud NKU alum. He received his undergraduate degree in accounting from NKU and is also a Certified Public Accountant. He is the father of two sons, Daniel and Joshua.
