●Also keep in mind that you must complete the necessary steps to work off-campus including registering for a class, applying for a job in your major, submitting the required CPT form to ISSS (DSO officers: Adam Widenaski or Aaron Spetz), getting approval and receiving your EAD card needed to work legally in the U.S. Note: Working off-campus at a job related or non-related to your major without completing the necessary paperwork and receiving permission could terminate your F-1 status
● Get your Social Security Card which is necessary for any employment (on-campus) or CPT
● Find a job in your major and have your prospective employer write a letter on their letterhead with specific start and end dates. It may state “as soon as possible” if needed. (Sample)
● Once your CPT is approved and your I-20 is ready, arrange for pick-up from ISSS. (Note: This is normally a 3 - 5 day process.)
● Sign your I-20, make 1 copy for yourself and give one copy to your employer.REMEMBER: You must do this process each semester that you work CPT, regardless of whether or not you change jobs.
It is; however, if you work over 20 hours, you must count it as full-time CPT and include it in your allowable 12 months of full-time CPT.
Note: Be sure to give yourself plenty of time before the semester ends to sign up for a Winter or Summer class if you will be working CPT. Many offices close or work limited hours once the semesters end.
