The NKU Music Preparatory Department has provided community and continuing education programs of the highest quality to students of all ages and abilities since 1993.
But it is the department's innovative and welcoming nature that makes it the best place to receive music instruction in northern Kentucky.
NKU Music Prep has won Best of NKY for 2014 in the category of music instruction!
That's no wonder because this elite department strives to enrich the culture of the greater-Cincinnati and northern-Kentucky regions through engaging artistic experiences and outreach initiatives.
“In addition to excellent music instruction and high-quality experiences, we pride ourselves on welcoming people into the NKU family,” said Dr. Holly Attar, the director of the Northern Kentucky University Music Preparatory Department.
“You will see Music Prep staff (which include several NKU students) greeting prep students at their cars, escorting them inside the Fine Arts Building, and engaging them in conversation. We greet them by name, talk with them about how we love music too, and make it a point to genuinely care about them.”
The Music Preparatory Department was established in 1993 and has grown into a comprehensive pre- and post-college music program that offers youth and adults instruction in the several areas. It operates under the belief that arts education is an essential and fundamental necessity.
“Music gives people the tools to express themselves, problem solve, learn teamwork, discipline, self-assessment, confidence, and so much more,” Attar said. “Whether students (young or not so young) are pursuing music as a career or simply for the enjoyment, their experiences with music will hopefully change – for the better – the way they engage with others, the community, and the world.”
The department has continued to innovate and excel in recent years. The NKU String Project is in its second year under the direction of Dr. Amy Gillingham and has gained national recognition for creativity and innovation in teaching and learning, and as part of the National String Project Consortium.
Mainstage Musical Theatre Company is also in its second year and the department’s new Youth Symphony Orchestra is the only full youth symphony orchestra in Northern Kentucky.
The department also provides private lessons for all instruments and voice, Prep Choir, Xylo-Zoo (an early childhood music class), and youth and adult piano labs for beginning and intermediate levels.
The NKU String Project is part of the nationally recognized National String Project Consortium.
The NKU Music Preparatory Department is the 2014 Best of NKY winner in the category of music instruction.
NKU Music Prep will introduce NKU Vocal Corps into the musical family.
Based on the very successful NKU String Project model, NKU Vocal Corps will be an NKU/Music Preparatory crossover program that provides exceptional musical experiences at remarkably affordable rates to community youth and adults, as well as provides invaluable teaching experience to university music students.
