In just the two short months since I have become president of our fine university, I have seen our dedication to helping others first hand. As I have had the opportunity to meet faculty, staff, students, alumni and community members, virtually every person has described what makes our university so special – our people. I agree. In particular, our faculty and staff have demonstrated our collective willingness to help others succeed. We help our students succeed in and out of the classroom every day. We help our community succeed. We help each other succeed.
Today, I am inviting you to continue this spirit of success by supporting the Combined Giving Campaign, which supports the United Way and Community Shares. We participate annually in the Combined Giving Campaign with the singular goal of making giving convenient. The campaign is structured to bring together many community organizations into one concentrated effort. Should you choose to support the campaign, you can elect to make a one-time payment either by payroll deduction, credit card or check, or you may make a recurring monthly gift.
Many times people think that it takes big gifts to make a difference. That isn’t so. By pooling our collective resources through many small gifts, we can help to create tremendous change for our community and those in need. I hope you’ll join me in contributing this year at whatever level you are comfortable with.
Later today you will receive a personalized link from UnitedWay.ePledge@uwgc.org offering you the opportunity to contribute to United Way. Online pledging to United Way is handled through the ePledge system and can be initiated by clicking on the personalized link provided in your email. You can learn more about the United Way of Greater Cincinnati at http://www.uwgc.org.
Giving to Community Shares is also easy and convenient. Simply visit https://www.ipledgeonline.org/_nkugives2012 to make your online pledge. You can learn more about Community Shares at http://www.cintishares.org.
Both online pledge systems are available now. Our campaign runs from today until Friday, October 26.
In addition to making a pledge, you can participate in two special events that benefit both organizations. Join me this Wednesday, October 10, at 11:30 a.m. in front of the Student Union for “Lunch for $5.” If the weather doesn’t cooperate, lunch will be served on the second floor of the Student Union, behind the information desk. Chartwells is graciously sponsoring this event, and all proceeds benefit the campaign. “Lunch for $5” will last until 1 p.m. or whenever the food runs out, whichever comes first. Also, Peter Rodish from Liberty Mutual is again sponsoring the campaign. For every home or auto insurance quote he writes for an NKU employee, he will donate $5 to the campaign.
Thank you for considering how you can support the important work of the United Way and Community Shares.
