After completing her Master’s degree in Economics from the University of Bombay in 1984, Nita joined Ashish in 1986 as his married partner; and both embarked on their life journey as two graduate, international students at UC Davis. Nita achieved her Ph.D. in Sociology and has been teaching Sociology since 1992 in the California State University system.
As a Sociologist, Nita has knowledge of and interest in, issues of global development, gender politics, and intersectional inequity and, immigration policies and experiences. Thus, she is a strong advocate for social change and challenging gender and racial and class inequities. She has taught at CSULA as an adjunct faculty for nearly 25 years.
As an immigrant to the US, Nita has extensively read scholarly works on immigration, followed US immigration policies closely and developed an interest in assisting immigrant minority groups, refugee populations in establishing successful roots in the US. She understands that it is never easy to leave your country of origin and establish a sense of belonging in a foreign land. But with local and native support, immigrant communities can succeed and thrive. The benefits of immigration, which are often generational, far outweigh the costs.
As a resident of US and an Indian by birth, Nita has a very global mindset. She keenly follows world events and politics as she recognizes that we live in an interconnected and digitized world. Nita enjoys traveling and experiencing diverse cultures, experimenting with different world cuisines and absorbing the different works of art, and architecture. She has not been to South America and would someday like to travel to the rainforest and the Galapagos Islands to experience the rich, natural diversity of planet earth.
Her biggest stress buster is spending time with her Chiweenie- Coco, who has a very interesting personality. Nita cannot imagine life without dogs! And she has developed extensive culinary talents under the tutelage of her mother and mother in law. She loves gourmet cooking and dining and entertaining family and friends.
She is extremely proud of her daughter who is currently completing her MBA in California and of her son who is working for P&G.
