ALEKS Assessment

ALEKS logo

Assessment and Learning in Knowledge Spaces is a Web-based, artificially intelligent assessment and learning system.

ALEKS uses adaptive questioning to quickly and accurately determine exactly what a student knows and doesn't know in a course. ALEKS then instructs the student on the topics she is most ready to learn. As a student works through a course, ALEKS periodically reassesses the student to ensure that topics learned are also retained. ALEKS courses are very complete in their topic coverage and ALEKS avoids multiple-choice questions. A student who shows a high level of mastery of an ALEKS course will be successful in the actual course they are taking.

ALEKS also provides the advantages of one-on-one instruction, 24/7, from virtually any Web-based computer for a fraction of the cost of a human tutor.

How do I take the ALEKS Assessment?

First Steps

  • Sign into ALEKS (click gold 'Click here to take your ALEKS Assessment' button above) using your NKU username & password. This is the ONLY way to access the NKU ALEKS Assessment. You will not be able to access the correct exam by entering the main ALEKS website.
  • Where it asks "Do you have an access code?", choose "No, I need to purchase an access code.", then "Continue".
  • Purchase access for $25 using a credit card.
  • Complete the first assessment un-proctored to get a baseline score. This score will not place you into a course - you will need a proctored score for course placement
  • Select the appropriate learning module and brush-up on content.

Once you have completed the initial assessment and your learning modules, you will then need to repeat the test proctored through ProctorU, which will require the use of a web-cam. Only proctored assessments may be used for placement into NKU courses.

Next Steps

  • Create an account on ProctorU and sign-up for an online proctor appointment or register with Testing Services to complete your test in person.
  • Pay the proctoring fee using a credit card.
  • Complete the placement test - this score can be used for placement into mathematics & statistics courses.
