SCOPE AND CONTENT:

The Elizabeth Kirtley collection consists of fifteen family bibles that contain the early records of several Boone County, Kentucky families and include all of the customary information (births, deaths and marriages) with one Bible (the Beemon Family Bible) containing records of Baptisms at the Gunpowder Baptist church.  One Bible (the Milton Gaines Family Bible) also contains photographs of the family.

Also included in the collection are genealogical materials that were donated by Mrs. Kirtley, most notably the Rose family bulletins and various genealogical research files, as well as Baptist church history publications, toll books and regulations for the Covington & Cincinnati Bridge Co., and the diaries of Burlington, Kentucky farmer Frank Rouse that span the years 1906 to 1960.  The diaries contain very general descriptions of the work Mr. Rouse was doing on his farm each day, along with notes about the weather, family news, deaths and other local events (especially weather-related news, such as the freezing of the Ohio River in 1918 and its flooding in the 1930s).  The diaries also contain occasional mention of world events, such as the signing of the Armistice to end WWI, the bombing of Pearl Harbor, and the end of WWII. Notably absent are any mentioned of the atomic bombs.
