Dear Campus Community:

George Floyd’s death had a deep impact on our nation and brought to light the fatal consequence of structural racism. The past year has taken a toll on many of us – no matter if you live in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area or elsewhere across the country. We especially feel for Floyd’s family and hope the guilty verdict gives them a sense of closure. As the trial ends, our country needs to come together and focus on the shared values that binds us as a community. This is how we heal and move forward as a nation.

Nearly a year ago, I shared a quote from the great Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in a campus message addressing the tensions in our country. “The ultimate measure of a person is not where you stand in moments of comfort and convenience, but where you stand at times of challenge and controversy.” Dr. King’s words are as true now as ever before.

Let us reaffirm NKU’s commitment to creating a more equitable community and stand together to advance change. Our core values embrace creating a community of belonging through equity and inclusion of diversity. We must continue the important work of preparing the next generation of leaders who can create more equitable and just communities.

Sincerely,
Ashish Vaidya
