Dual-Credit Instructor Credentialing Scholarship

Helping educators attain the communication, English, or history masters-level content hours they need to provide dual-credit opportunities for their students

The School-Based Scholars program (SBS) is offering a scholarship that will allow Kentucky high school teachers who need additional graduate hours to earn the credits needed to teach dual-credit courses in their high schools. Scholarship recipients will receive curated advising from the department that houses their chosen area of study to help them succeed.

About the Scholarship

Qualifications: This scholarship is designed to give interested teachers the opportunity to earn up to 18 graduate hours needed to be credentialed to teach dual-credit courses in one of three content areas: communication, English, or history. It is preferred, but not required, that KY high school teachers who are interested in the Dual-Credit Instructor Credentialing Scholarship have earned a master’s degree from a regionally accredited university.

Expectations: Please take note of the expectations for any teacher selected for this scholarship:

While in the scholarship program:

  • Teachers will take the required classes determined by NKU to meet the credentials required of the individual NKU academic department in which he/she will teach.
  • The scholarship will cover the cost of the recommended graduate courses up to the 2022-23 year Education graduate resident tuition rate ($400/credit hr); if an applicant lives outside of Kentucky, they may be responsible for any additional tuition costs.
  • Teachers will be responsible for purchasing their textbooks and paying any NKU or course fees.
  • Teachers who want to maintain scholarship eligibility will have no more than four academic years to complete their graduate coursework to be credentialed to teach dual-credit courses.
  • Teachers who want to maintain scholarship eligibility may not sit out two concurrent semesters without approval from the Scholarship Committee.
  • NKU/SBS will verify enrollment for scholarship recipients each semester.

After completion of the scholarship:

  • NKU academic departments will notify the SBS program of a teacher’s conditional approval to teach dual-credit coursework. Please note: completion of the required graduate hours does not guarantee dual-credit teaching. Departments may have additional requirements for approval (e.g. interviews). Once approved, departments will reach out to teachers to complete additional “new hire” paperwork prior to your first semester teaching.
  • Teachers will teach the approved NKU dual-credit courses and follow the same learning outcomes, content, and syllabus as used by NKU departments.
  • Teachers will teach their approved NKU dual-credit courses exclusively for NKU for a minimum of five years upon completion of the scholarship at a Kentucky high school.
  • Teachers will meet/converse regularly with an assigned faculty liaison from the respective NKU academic department.
  • Teachers will attend the annual SBS Faculty Development Day held at NKU by the SBS program each school year or their dual-credit course(s) may be cancelled.
  • Teachers will build into their dual-credit course(s) opportunities for students to engage with NKU’s campus through activities on-campus.
  • Teacher’s high school will offer the approved NKU dual-credit courses to eligible high school students as a part of the teacher’s regular course load at their high school.
