What is LockDown Browser?

Lockdown Browser is a custom browser that provides a secure testing environment when using Canvas. Students are locked into the assessment and are unable to print, copy, go to another URL, or access other applications. Respondus Monitor is a companion product for LockDown Browser that enables institutions to protect the integrity of non-proctored, online exams. Students use their own computer and a webcam to record assessment sessions, all without leaving Canvas. LockDown Browser is made by the company Respondus, the same company that makes StudyMate and Respondus.

Where do you go to use it?

Instructors go to Canvas to setup LockDown Browser. It can be enabled from the Navigation area of Settings in your course. Once enabled, you can choose which quizzes will require LockDown Browser. Your students will then need to download and install the LockDown Browser to take your tests.

Note: If you are using the Respondus Lockdown Browser for a quiz you have copied from another course or after a course copy, you will need to access the Respondus Lockdown Browser dashboard at least once before a student attempts to take the quiz.  This step re-synchronizes the course with Respondus Lockdown Browser.  If this is not done, the lockdown browser will not be required.
