Chest Binders: Northern Kentucky University, Greater Cincinnati Region

In participation with LGBTQA+ Student Initiatives, the Care Closet @ NKU is now offering chest binders to NKU students at no cost.

When used properly, chest binders can reduce certain feminine characteristics by providing individuals with the appearance of a flat chest. If you would like more information about obtaining a chest binder, please fill out the form below or email carecloset@nku.edu.

Chest binders should be used according to manufacturer instructions. If used improperly, chest binding may cause or contribute to skin irritation or tenderness or more severe health issues. NKU does not provide training on how to properly use chest binders. If you have questions on proper use or have issues related to misuse, please consult with a qualified medical professional.

Before requesting a binder, please read through this full page, so that you are prepared to answer the questions on the form.

The form will ask for your binder selection and sizing, so you will need to be prepared with your measurements/sizing before filling out the form.

We currently have a limited supply of binders available. Please stop by the Care Closet @ NKU to see if we have your size in stock.

Before Taking Your Measurements

Taking your measurements can give you an idea of what size chest binder could fit you best, depending on the sizing of each brand of binder.

Use a measuring tape – Need one? Visit UC 142 to borrow one of ours!
Do not wear a bra or any other compression products when taking your measurements.
Each chest measurement should be taken all the way around your torso. The measuring tape should not compress your chest tissue, but should touch your body. If the measuring tape is not touching your body, it is too loose.
Make sure to write down your measurements on a piece of paper or in the notes app on your phone.

Measurements to Take

Underarm measurement – take this measurement just above where your breast tissue begins. The measuring tape should lay just below your armpits and at the beginning of your breast tissue.
The largest part of the chest – take this measurement around the torso and chest where the most breast tissue is (usually around the nipples, but this will vary person to person).
Under bust measurement – take this measurement directly under your breast tissue.
Shoulder width – place the measuring tape at the point of one of your shoulders. Then, stretch the tape to the point of your other shoulder. Do not wrap the measuring tape all the way around your shoulders for this measurement – just point to point.
