March 2026:  Warning for Select Duo Mobile App Users to Upgrade to Supported Version

NKU uses the Duo application for 2-factor authentication to login to campus online services.  2-factor authentication protects your NKU user account, preventing attackers from using your NKU account for their own, often criminal activities.

On Tuesday, March 31, 2026 Duo will stop allowing older versions of the Duo Mobile app from authenticating.

Duo Mobile needs to be version 4.85.0 or higher.

Most users are already on this or newer versions, but some NKU users using older versions than 4.85.0 of the Duo Mobile App may experience login issues if they don't take action before 3/31/2026.

WHAT TO DO
First, Check Your Current Duo Mobile Version:
1.  Open the Duo Mobile app.  You may see an alert telling you to upgrade the app.
2.  Tap the menu icon (three horizontal lines) in the top left corner.
3.  The version number is listed at the bottom of the pane.
4.  If your app version is greater than 4.85.0, you don't need to take any further action, the app will continue to function without issue.

If the app version is less than 4.85.0:
You’ll need to update the Duo app on your phone or tablet to at least version 4.85.0:
1.  To update, check the Apple App Store or Google Play Store
2.  Find the Duo app and click the "Update" or "Upgrade" button

If your Duo app cannot update to version 4.85.0 or greater, you must consider a few alternatives:
1.  If you were already considering a phone upgrade/replacement - a new phone will allow the fixed, new version of the Duo mobile app
or
2.  You can switch your authentication method from Duo Push (requiring the app) to SMS (doesn't require the app) to receive text messages of codes that you will need to enter when logging in (text messaging may subject you to additional fees, see your provider for further details).  You can change this setting at any time at the NKU Duo Self Service portal:  https://duo.nku.edu/

If these options are not viable, please contact the NKU helpdesk for security to evaluate your case and find a suitable solution.  Helpdesk contact information is located here:  https://inside.nku.edu/content/inside/it/help.html

Upcoming Outages

The Horizon Virtual Desktop environment located at https://view.nku.edu will be unavailable from 8am Thursday Mar 12 until 5pm Friday Mar 13 to install system and security upgrades.
