On the back cover of the print version of NKU Magazine, we always include a photo from the Schlachter University Archives that has us puzzling over what's going on. For the Fall/Winter 2018-19 issue, we had some questions about the above photo, asking,

Is that you, Katniss Everdeen? The registrar has no record of the Mockingjay ever attending NKU, so probably not, but these archers look poised and ready to topple the Capitol and win the Hunger Games. “I volunteer as Tribute!”

What’s going on between Regents Hall and the Lucas Administrative Center? Is this some kind of archery club? A marksman competition? Green Arrow cosplay group? Help us out! Email your memories (or total guesses) to nkumagazine@nku.edu or tweet us at @nkumagazine. Let’s set this mystery straight as an arrow.

Tamara Barnes Gilvin (‘84) wrote in with an explanation after recognizing herself as the mystery archer. Here’s what she had to say:

Imagine my surprise when someone posted the NKU Mockingjay photo on Facebook and asked if it was me. It was indeed me as a 19-year-old sophomore in the spring of 1982. In those days a PE class was required as well as a 1-credit hour focus. Archery was one of the options. Since I enjoyed shooting in the backyard with my father, archery was the best option for me.

Thanks so much for the wonderful memories.  I graduated from NKU with a teaching degree in 1984, completed my Master’s in Education at NKU in 1987 and ended up teaching an EDU class for a few years after I retired from teaching in 2012.
