“Not only has Maria been a role model to me and so many other freshman as we start our college careers, but she has also been a source of absolute positivity, love, and friendship. Maria is truly the embodiment of a valiant woman. Her leadership abilities and selfless acts by way of volunteering are second to none. She volunteers her time with various ministries while interning, holding multiple leadership role and being a good friend to all she meets. Maria's hardworking nature, sense of leadership and compassion shines through in everything she does. She naturally takes on leadership roles in every activity that she's involved with. She is generous with her time and work, and even more selfless as a friend. She's a very hard worker when it comes to her academics, but works just as hard to serve the NKU community through her organizations. She does everything from hosting and planning events on campus to intentionally making people feel welcomed and being a friend to all. Maria is involved in NKU Catholic Newman Center, Northern Right to Life and NKU Honors College.

What is your favorite thing about NKU?
I love so much about NKU, but I think I especially love the small class sizes here. It was what drew me to NKU in the first place after growing up in a small school in western Kentucky. Now that I've been in classes here for four years, I realize how much that has positively impacted my educational journey here. I've been able to meet some of my best friends and build deeper relationships with a lot of my professors because of the smaller classes.

Where is your favorite spot on campus? What makes that spot so special?
My favorite spot on campus would either be the lobby of Griffin Hall or Starbucks. I have so many memories in each place of either cozying up with homework for a couple hours or hanging out with my friends between classes. Both areas have brought me a lot of joy and comfort over the years. When it's warm and sunny out though, I also love being outside at the amphitheater overlooking Loch Norse. I feel like that's easily one of the prettiest views at NKU.

What is the first word that comes to mind when you think about NKU?
The first word that comes to mind when I think of NKU is "new." Coming to NKU was a huge step in a new adventure in my life, and involved a 5-hour move across Kentucky to a place where I previously knew no one and nothing about the area. Now, I consider NKU a second home for me. Over the past four years, NKU has brought me some of my best friends, hardest challenges and overwhelming joys. The ways that I have grown spiritually, academically, emotionally and mentally here have helped shape me into a new and more authentic version of myself than I was when I arrived in 2016. NKU was not only a new adventure, but also gave me the experiences that have made me a new person as well.

What is your favorite way to spend your free time?
In my free time, I love spending time with my family and friends, as well as writing, reading and fangirling over too many things. I also love traveling and exploring new places, listening to music (especially Taylor Swift) and eating tacos.

What is your greatest passion?
My greatest passion is my Catholic faith, which I feel is at the core of so many of my other passions. Since coming to NKU, my faith has been able to grow and flourish through my community at the NKU Catholic Newman Center and the opportunities that have been presented to me there. I also have a passion for creativity as well as helping others. My dream is that through my public relations major, I can find a job in the future that combines both of these in a professional setting.

Tell us anything else about yourself and/or NKU that you want folks to know.
NKU has given me so much, and I'm so grateful for the experiences I have had in my classes and internships, as well as my student organizations over the years: NKU Catholic Newman Center, Northern Right to Life, The Northerner and the Honors College. NKU has been such a gift and I'll be sad to leave this chapter of my life when I graduate in May.
