Subject: MLK Day of Service

Dear NKU faculty, staff and students,

Good morning and welcome back for the Spring 2021 semester!

Please let me introduce myself:  My name is Dr. Eddie Howard and I am honored to serve as the Vice President for Student Affairs here at NKU. I officially began my role on January 1, but today I am excited to join the whole community whether we are on campus or learning and working remotely. My goals are simple. I plan to work with President Vaidya and everyone else across campus to help our students succeed. Therefore, our division must partner to create the best educational experience for students that is humanly possible.

Now I am pleased to invite you all to join in the Third Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service on Monday, January 18, 2021, as we celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. King.

We still have opportunities to serve the community despite the ongoing pandemic. In fact, service and donations are important as ever. Anything that you can safely do will have an important impact on the community. For example, the Women's Crisis Center or the Brighton Center are local agencies that are in great need of personal care items. Donations may be made here:

Brighton Center
741 Central Avenue
Newport, KY 41071

Women's Crisis Center
835 Madison Avenue
Covington, KY 41011

Our virtual celebration is open to NKU students, staff, faculty, alumni, community members, and family members and will begin at 10:00 a.m. with a call to service for the year. The program will include a live keynote address from a national speaker, Alfonzo Jones, who has more than 25 years of experience working in higher education and a passion for working with students to help them achieve success. After the keynote, Mr. Jones will facilitate a discussion on race for our NKU community. The day will also feature student performances and other opportunities for NKU and community engagement.

In order to participate in the virtual events, you must register by Thursday, January 14, at https://nku.eventsair.com/mlkdayofservice/register/Site/Register. Additional details about the event can be found at https://inside.nku.edu/mlk2021.html.

Service to the community such as this is a quality I have long admired in NKU and I could not be more excited to join my new community in making a difference next Monday. I hope you will join us as we honor the life and work of Dr. King.

Thank you for all that you do for NKU students, NKU, and the community. Have a great week and best wishes for a successful semester.

Sincerely,

Dr. Eddie Howard
