Articulation is the process that facilitates the movement of a student from one educational institution to another. Northern Kentucky University has created formal partnerships, pathway and articulation agreements to advance the opportunities for students seeking to obtain their bachelor’s degree.

There are two types of formal agreements:
To be defined as a Formal Pathway or Articulation Agreement, official documents must be signed by appropriate and pre-defined parties from both NKU and the institution with which the agreement has been formed.
Since a Pathway Agreement falls under an overarching articulation agreement (example: Gateway2NKU, it does not usually need additional signatures unless requested by one or both parties. However, if you are looking to create pathways with a partner institution that we do not have partnership agreement with, an Articulation Agreement will need to be signed.
Initiation of an agreement may begin with a department or another outside institution. Once the creation of an agreement is mutually agreed upon by the partnering institution and NKU, departments should work with UPAC to begin the process of drafting an agreement. UPAC is here to assist in all phases of this process; however, it is the responsibility of the faculty/academic department to ensure that all degree requirements are fulfilled within the agreement. It should also be noted that any agreements with non-regionally accredited or international institutions will require additional information regarding faculty credentials and syllabi for SACS approval.
Although individual agreements may vary, there are a set of parameters that are required for the development of all NKU agreements. Please see the downloadable worksheets under Resources to assist in the development of an articulation or pathway agreement.
The University Pathway and Articulation Committee (UPAC) is available to provide departmental training upon request. Please contact Diane Williams at williamsd@nku.edu.
