Retirement Plans

All full-time non-temporary faculty and staff regularly scheduled and working 20 hours per week or more are required to participate in the university’s 403(b) plan. Participation begins after 90 days of employment. The employee contribution is 5 percent of regular base pay on a before-tax basis.  NKU contributes 10 percent. The employee is 100 percent vested (owns) both their own and NKU contributions immediately. The 403(b) plan is offered through TIAA with a choice of 35 different investment options.

Employees, who previously participated in a TIAA account, may begin contributions immediately by providing a copy of their current TIAA account statement to Benefits.

Regular staff employees in Tier 1 & Tier 2 contribute and earn service credit in Kentucky Public Pensions Authority (KPPA) while employed at NKU in a full-time position. 

Tier 1 employees have a participation date prior to September 1, 2008.

Tier 2 employees have a participation date between September 1, 2008 and December 31, 2013.
