This eLearning to Advance Racial and Ethnic Diversity Friendly University Initiative at Northern Kentucky University is to take action to increase the racial and ethnic diversity of their student bodies and workforces. The initiative is also to promote the infusion of necessary racial and ethnic diversity content, resources, and activities within existing curricula to help ensure that the programs and schools at NKU are equipped to prepare our undergraduates and graduates to work effectively with racially and ethnically diverse groups and their families, regardless of practice setting.
According to the American Council on Education, the higher education has a longstanding to access to higher education for all to the advancement of equal educational opportunity. The eLearning to Advance Racial and Ethnic Diversity Friendly University Initiative enriches the educational experience, promotes personal growth and a healthy society, strengths communities and the workplace, enhances sense of belonging and trust relationship, and prepares student success and effective community engagement.
Ethnicity can have a profound impact on how people feel and see themselves. Ethnicity is identity related to a specific cultural or national tradition. It also refers to the presence of people from a variety of cultural and ethnic backgrounds or identities. In the United States and Greater Cincinnati, many people identify with more than one ethnic group, and that might experience ethnic diversity within their own families and communities.
Ethnic Diversity can influence people by affecting their value systems, governing their traditions and religious beliefs, causing conflicts with others, and impacting their perspectives on education.
This project website will provide ongoing racial and ethnic diversity content and events in which increasing awareness of eLearning (online learning) to Advance Racial and Ethnic Diversity Friendly University initiative for our NKU undergraduate and graduate students. This project website is intended to provide a wide range of educational and community resources to college students, faculty, and staff, including people of color on campus, and community, including Greater Cincinnati region.
Suk-hee Kim, Ph.D., COI, MSW, eLearning to Advance Racial and Ethnic Diversity Friendly University Initiative Founder, Associate Professor in the School of Social Work & Academic Affairs Diversity Faculty Fellow at Northern Kentucky University.
Dr. Kim was honored by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) with its Distinguished Recent Contributions to Social Work Education Award 2021 as one of the significant recognitions at the national level. She also received CSWE’s 2020 Council on the Role and Status of Women in Social Work Education Community Impact Award and 2019 Commission for Diversity and Social & Economic Justice Community Partnership Action Inaugural Award at the national level.
Carolyn Noe, Project Web Developer
Carolyn Noe is the Director for the Institute for Health Innovation. Carolyn earned her MA in History and Graduate Certificate in Museum Studies from the University of Missouri – St. Louis and her BS in Social Science from Florida State University. Carolyn comes to NKU from the University of Cincinnati where she served as the Program Coordinator for UC LEAF on the ADVANCE grant to support women in STEM faculty. Prior to that position, she worked for the Academy of Science – St. Louis where she developed and coordinated STEM education programs. Carolyn is the founder of Super Heroines, Etc., a non-profit organization that uses the power of fandom to fight for equity and representation in geek culture. She lives with her husband, Chris, daughter, Claire, and two dogs, Mr. Darcy & Petie. Carolyn is excited to start NKU’s EdD program in summer 2022.
Jude Thornton, Graduate Research Assistant
Jude Thornton is an NKU Social Work graduate student and the graduate assistant to the eLearning and Student Success project. Jude also works as a staff member in the Institute for Health Innovation at NKU, where they coordinate two grants aimed at increasing the number of substance abuse treatment professionals in the workforce. As an NKU alum, Jude is passionate about the campus community and creating a welcoming environment for all students. Jude loves to spend time with their family and pets. When the weather is nice, you can find them hiking at one of the many parks that the greater Cincinnati area has to offer.
