A collaborative support network for students

Student Conduct, Rights & Advocacy (SCRA), in partnership and collaboration with University Connect & Persist (UCAP), has developed a series of programs for faculty and staff across the University to help reduce barriers for student services and promote collaboration in support of challenging student circumstances. Led by Dr. Bob Alston, LaNighta Reid, and Toni Perkins, Care.Consult.Connect is a series of conversations to initiate discussions about how student care is coordinated among service aligned offices across the institution, help answer questions, and connect with other faculty and staff to reduce barriers for student support and services.

The series is currently three sessions, each focused on the issues students may be facing at that point in the semester. Each will be offered both live and via Zoom (simulcast), and may shift fully online depending on public health restrictions at the time. More information will be published closer to each session. These sessions are intended to be a collaborative learning experience for all interested faculty and staff.

Session #1 - Friday, September 10, 2021; 9:00am-10:00am; SU 302
Re-introducing the 'Gold Folder' and working through how it might be used to support students who demonstrate a care need

Session #2 - Friday, October 22, 2021; 9:00am-10:00am; UC 135
Post-midterm conversations with students, mental health support, and supporting student decisions around withdrawal and university processes.

Session #3 - Friday, November 19, 2021; 9:00am-10:00am; UC 135
Focus on circumstances for which a student might request an incomplete grade, retroactive late withdrawal, and other associated processes.

An Upward Bound Update

Summer 2021 Upward Bound Students

by Judy Welsh

Junior and Senior students from five area high schools spent four weeks in June and July living in University Suites on NKU’s campus and learning about college life. These students will be part of the Upward Bound program until they graduate from high school. After attending classes during the day, evenings gave them an opportunity to be creative in activities planned by our summer RA staff. Thursdays were spent going off campus and seeing historical sites such as Shaker Village and visiting several college campuses to help them make college choices.

At the end of the four weeks, all students participated in a symposium where they gave informative presentations based on a topic they chose and researched. Even those who were intimidated by the thought of public speaking were able to accomplish this goal. At the end of the program, students and their parents or guests attended a banquet and students received awards to honor their accomplishments. We will be continuing our work with these students and with new recruits as schools begin this fall.

The Center for Student Engagement has developed a new student involvement incentive program: Victor E. Coins! Students will earn Coins by going to events, getting involved, and building community at NKU. They can then cash those coins in for prizes and experiences! CSE needs YOUR help promoting this program and encouraging student participation by making sure that any events that your department is hosting are on the Presence Calendar. If you have questions about Victor E. Coins, Presence, or programming, please contact Emily Sagraves at sagravese1@nku.edu.

UCAP Textbook Lending at Steely Library

As we return to a Reimagined U this fall semester, we wanted to share some exciting news regarding our reimagined UCAP Lending Library.

The UCAP Lending Library is now permanently housed at Steely Library and will be referred to as:

UCAP Textbook Lending at Steely Library

Students will have access to a wide range of textbooks during Steely Library's regular business hours.

NEW this year -- there is no limit on the number of texts a student may borrow. First come, first served. As always, students are invited to meet with UCAP staff for an academic and financial wellness check at any time. UCAP staff will be available in Steely Library for several hours a day the first two weeks of the semester.

Back to School written on a chalk board

Recall your childhood excitement as the first day of the new school year approached? Are you reminded of the anticipation and hope of new beginnings, or the opportunity to reconnect with friends? Do you still rejoice at the challenge and wonder of back to school shopping? These common feelings may also have been accompanied by apprehension, curiosity and even fear of the unknown. The emotional rollercoaster related to formal education as an adult learner is very similar. Consider the Fall 2021 semester as a fresh start! Hopefully the “Covid-19 pandemic” is behind us; you made it through and you are resilient!

Take a pause to set new personal, professional, financial, health and exercise goals. Establish time for reflection. Allow for flexibility and adjustments when the inevitable obstacle or set back occurs. Treat every day as a new start and an opportunity to shine! Challenge yourself with a fresh perspective and diverse opportunities. Embrace the unknown; encourage others while on your journey.

The counselors and nursing staff of NKU’s Health, Counseling & Student Wellness consider your mental health and physical wellbeing our primary focus and key components to your academic success. Start your journey with a call to the NKU’s HCSW office, conveniently located on campus for an in person or telehealth visit. It’s as simple as phoning the office at 859-572-5650 and saying “Hello, My name is……"

Volunteer for Move-in!

Move in is an annual event featuring more than 100 volunteers who help to welcome students to Northern Kentucky University. Each volunteer has a particular role: working in the parking lots, directing students and their families to the right locations for check-in and move in, helping with sustainability efforts, handing out water, and other duties that help to make the move-in process as smooth as possible.

Volunteers are the largest part of the move-in process, other than the new students and their families! For participating, volunteers can move in early, receive a free t-shirt, and enjoy a free lunch on the day they volunteer. For more information, reach out to Brittany Jackson, Associate Director for Residence Life at jacksonb14@nku.edu.
