In collaboration with various university departments and student organizations, this week commemorates the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Each program serves both as an educational and inspirational outlet, which honors one of our nation’s most revered civil rights leaders.
African American Student Initiatives sponsors and co-sponsors various events throughout the month of February, in recognition of the national month which honors and pays tribute to the history and events of the African Diaspora.
In collaboration with the Black Faculty and Staff Association, African American Student Initiatives hosts an award ceremony which recognizes faculty, staff and students for their work within the campus community and abroad. Ujima, one of the seven principles of Kwanzaa, meaning collective work and responsibility combines the rich tradition of recognition and the celebration of those individuals who have progressively worked toward the advancement of community.
Meaning “Celebration” in Swahili, is an opportunity to provide African and African American graduates with a more intimate and African-centered means of recognizing and honoring their achievement amongst a community of peers, family and friends.
Sherehe is celebrated twice a year at the conclusion of Fall and Spring semesters.
A week designed to assist in the transition to NKU and to welcome new and returning students to campus. Students will enjoy networking with faculty, staff and alumni, attend events highlighting campus resources, and listen to speakers that will encourage them as they begin their academic year!
“The mission of African American Student Initiatives (AASI) is to facilitate a support system which advocates academic excellence, celebrates African/African American culture, and engages students with faculty, staff, alumni, and the NKU community."
Our mission is achieved through four key areas:
•Providing a space where African/ African American students can connect and create a “home away from home”.
•Building commUNITY among students at NKU.
•Providing educational opportunities through programming, trainings, and lectures.
•Advancing the cultural competency of the NKU community by collaborating with the departments in the Center for Student Inclusiveness.
On behalf of African American Student Initiatives (AASI) I want to welcome you to Northern Kentucky University! Our office strives to uphold the principle of Umoja which means to strive for and maintain unity in the family and community. We are truly a “home away from home” for students, faculty, and staff. We provide programming, advocacy, and outreach that assists with retaining Black/African students, and encourages them to achieve their academic and personal goals.
It takes a village to create leaders, and to ensure the success of students!
In Service,
African American Student Initiatives
