What is Kaltura?
Kaltura is a video hosting service that allows you to easily record and upload videos from your computer into Canvas. Videos uploaded to Kaltura can be placed anywhere in your course or automatically placed in a Course Gallery so all of your videos are centrally located for your students.
Kaltura has a component on your computer and in Canvas. You will need to enable Kaltura My Media from the Navigation area of Settings in your course. Once enabled, you will be able to see all of your videos and create new videos there. You will need to download the Kaltura recorder application to a computer if you want to record videos.
Although Kaltura does save all of your videos so you can use them multiple semesters, Kaltura is not intended as a long term storage repository for videos and other media files. We will only retain videos and other media files which are viewed regularly. Each month, CITE employees will review our storage levels and determine if deletions need to take place to stay within our contractual storage and bandwidth limits. We will begin by deleting videos with 0 views which were first uploaded more than 1 year and half a semester ago. We will then move on to delete old videos with 1 view, 2 views, 3 views, and so on, until we are back within a comfortable margin of our limit. We will not delete any videos less than 1 year and half a semester old. Please email CITE at cite@nku.edu if you need help backing up Kaltura videos.
NKU has recently migrated all Faculty Tegrity videos over to Kaltura. This means if you were using a Tegrity video you will need to edit the broken links in your courses so they link to Kaltura instead.
CITE has created a document for you to use to help you through this process: Tegrity to Kaltura
Please call Travis Downing at x7946 if you have any issues with this process.
