Policy Documents:

The final Dress Code policy is located here. Also included are a comparison showing changes from the proposal and the prior version of the policy.

Summary:

The revised policy clarifies descriptions of acceptable attire and reaffirms a professional standard for all positions, while recognizing that what constitutes professional attire varies based on the nature of the work being performed.

Comments:

Commenters challenged the proposal’s description of unprofessional attire, requested clarification regarding how disagreements regarding enforcement should be addressed and the circumstances in which a disability accommodation should be sought, and more broadly questioned the need for any dress code policy.

Changes in Final Policy vs. Proposal:

Several changes were made in response to comments:

  • Language was added to further acknowledge differences in professional attire depending on the nature and setting of the work.
  • Descriptions of unprofessional attire, including references to worn and faded clothing, were removed.
  • Language was added to indicate that disagreements regarding policy interpretation and enforcement should be directed to Human Resources.
  • A clarifying sentence was added to note that most attire and related modifications made to accommodate a disability or to express religious beliefs typically are consistent with the policy and do not require an exception.
