Policy Documents:

The final Security Cameras policy is located here. Also included are a comparison showing changes from the proposal and the prior version of the policy.

Summary:

The revised Security Cameras policy clarifies rules regarding use of security cameras on campus, identifies the Chief of the NKU Police Department as the responsible official, establishes additional procedural protections for use of security cameras in classrooms, and makes other miscellaneous adjustments.

Comments:

A small number of comments were received, including a request to standardize the retention period for all cameras, to consider the discretion afforded the Chief of Police in permitting non-NKUPD staff to review security camera feeds, and to revisit language indicating that not all security cameras are monitored 24/7/365.

Changes in Final Policy vs. Proposal:

The final policy reflects changes in response to these comments:

  • A new retention period of at least 30 days will apply to all security camera footage.
  • Language was added to require notice to the Chief Information Officer and the General Counsel when non-NKUPD staff monitor live feeds.

The statement disclaiming 24/7/365 monitoring is necessary to communicate accurately about what the cameras offer (investigative tool in the event of an incident) and do not offer (monitoring to facilitate emergency response).
