For Nicole Froning, a college degree represents years of hard work, dedication and personal growth.

“It's not just a piece of paper to me,” she says. “It is a symbol of my achievements and the beginning of new opportunities and possibilities.”

The Maysville native transferred to Northern Kentucky University through the Gateway2NKU program and enrolled as a general business major in the Haile College of Business. One of her favorite memories during her time here was when she arrived at first-year orientation.

“It was a lively gathering filled with welcoming students and games,” she says. “I had the opportunity to meet new people and have the sense of community and excitement made it a truly memorable experience.”

"Dive into all opportunities, remember take care of yourself first, and don't be shy or scared to ask for help. Explore all the cool stuff on campus, try new things, and most importantly, believe in yourself. College is your adventure, so make every moment count!"

Froning, who is a single parent, found that sense of community even more so when she got involved on campus. She was engaged with and connected to the Office of Parents Attending College (PAC), Latino Student Initiatives (LSI), the Latinos Avanzando Mentorship Program (LAMP), the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), TRIO Student Support Services, the Center for Student Inclusiveness (CSI) and Q.P.L.U.S. Scholars.

She spends a lot of her down time with the Center for Student Inclusiveness. The CSI lounge, which happens to be her favorite spot on campus, is on the third floor of the Student Union.

“It's a comfortable and welcoming area students can relax, study, and socialize,” she says. “Having a cozy atmosphere, the CSI lounge is a popular choice for many students seeking a break from their academic day.”

When she’s not taking a break in the CSI lounge, Froning’s greatest passion is learning. She enjoys learning new ideas, concepts and perspectives. Learning fuels her growth—whether it’s engaging in discussions or seeking out new experiences, she says.

And she encourages first-year students to follow the same path and utilize the resources that are available on NKU’s campus.

“Dive into all opportunities, remember take care of yourself first, and don't be shy or scared to ask for help,” she says. “Explore all the cool stuff on campus, try new things, and most importantly, believe in yourself. College is your adventure, so make every moment count!”
