Active Learning

Speaker: Denice Robertson

Description: Are your students actively involved in their learning? Not sure what exactly your options are for active learning? In this session we will introduce several options for increasing active learning, discuss the importance of adding active learning, and provide resources for numerous activities.

Transparency in Learning and Career Competencies

Roundtable led by Bethany Bowling and Abdou Ndoye

Description: In this interactive dialogue/roundtable discussion session, a panel of faculty members will share their insights on transparency in learning and teaching (TILT) and the incorporation of career competencies into curricula. Panelists will discuss their experiences using principles of the transparency framework across multiple disciplines and highlight the connection between transparency and career competencies as outlined in the Kentucky Graduate Profile.  Panel will feature Cristiane Biazzin, Associate Professor of Supply Chain, Betty Russell, Lecturer of Chemistry, and Doug Hume, Professor of Anthropology.

 

Mental Health

Speaker: Christopher Lawrence

Description: Phrases like “self-care”, “wellness”, and “well-being” have become quite common in educational settings, but to what extent are they actually incorporated into the learning experience? This session will explore ways to weave well-being into the classroom, examining interpersonal strategies, design considerations, and assorted activities instructors may use to assist students in navigating mental health challenges. 

AI for Everyone

Speakers: Evan Downing and Shannon Eastep

Description: Discover the world of AI during this session. Learn about AI fundamentals, including ChatGPT usage, and explore the fascinating realm of AI art. Understand the significance of embracing AI as a valuable ally rather than shying away from it or attacking it. Get inspired with engaging AI assignment examples and witness a showcase of specific AI tools that you can find and utilize. The Challenges and Opportunities of Generative Artificial Intelligence 

Speaker: Nicholas Caporusso

Description: This session will discuss key concepts regarding generative Artificial Intelligence systems, to better address the challenges presented by tools such as ChatGPT. Also, it will provide an overview of tools, resources, and best practices for effectively incorporating AI in the classroom, including the example of an Honors Meyerson student philanthropy course in which students utilized AI to create art for the community.

 

 

Engaging Students on the First Day of Class

Speakers: Sarah Kasten, Bethany Noblitt & Melissa Hess

Description: In this session we will share some of the ways that we engage students on the first day of class to get them excited about learning and about the course. We will leave time at the end of the session for participants to share some of the great ways they start each semester class so that everyone will leave with a lot of great ideas.

Experiential Learning

Speakers: Julie Olberding, Christopher Wilkey & Patty Kappesser

Description: This session highlights practical approaches to integrating experiential learning into course work. Panelists share strategies for coordinating experiential learning opportunities for students in partnership with stakeholders outside the classroom.

Is your Canvas course setup for ALL students?

Speaker: Vanessa Wieland

Description: Bring your laptops and take advantage of 45 minutes to work on making your online course materials more accessible with tips, tricks, and tools demonstrated by CITE! We will work through some easy methods for adding presence and providing alternate means of access for students.

Faculty Role in Adult and Transfer Students’ Sense of Belonging

Speakers: Yasue Kuwahara, Amy Danzo, Sara Conwell, & Kimberly McCoy

Description: This session addresses the misconceptions about adult learners and transfer students, who constitute approximately one-third of NKU students. The presenters will discuss how the faculty can create an environment that supports adult and transfer students and increase their retention.
