The university purchased Lakeside Place Nursing Home in 2007 and completed a comprehensive renovation in 2008, creating a new residential facility for students. With eight wings and three floors housing a total of 440 students, the building features several room types, all with private toilet/sink and many with a full bathroom. Callahan is located at the southeast edge of campus, in the East Residential Village and is served by the NKU shuttle. Callahan's dining venue, Callahan Bistro, was fully renovated in 2015. The Bistro is an exciting campus dining destination.
The building was named James P. Callahan Hall at dedication ceremonies July 9, 2008. Jim Callahan, a state representative from 1988 to 2004, served the Northern Kentucky region and the Commonwealth with distinction, including four terms as House Majority Caucus Chair. A champion of higher education, Representative Callahan was a sponsor of the historic 1997 higher education reform legislation and passionate supporter of Northern Kentucky University.
Callahan Hall is in the beginning stages of a renovation that will improve the mechanical systems in the building, which will include the installation of new piping throughout the building, the replacement of HVAC components in mechanical rooms, and updates and replacements for water heaters. This renovation project is scheduled to be completed by August 2022.
