LAMP Students

The Latinos Avanzando Mentorship Program (LAMP) was created to promote and enhance the retention and academic success of incoming freshmen and transfer students at NKU and to build leadership skills among upperclassmen. It is designed to provide Latino students at NKU with a support system comprised of fellow students, faculty, staff, and employees of local organizations with the purpose of improving retention, encouraging career exploration, and providing exposure to local businesses. The ultimate goal of LAMP is to help students achieve academic and social success at Northern Kentucky University and beyond.

LAMP is coordinated by the Director of Latino Student Initiatives, Tiburcio Lince, and Student Affairs. In addition, there are Head Peer Mentors who assist in the success of the program. Each Head Peer Mentor is assigned a group of mentors/mentees and they work in collaboration to ensure the academic success of all students involved in the LAMP program. Mentors and mentees meet at least once a month to provide support and guidance. Events are created throughout the semester to help students grow socially, academically, and to help them prepare for their future career options and success.

Please keep in mind that you don't have to belong to a specific ethnic group/minority to participate. The program is devoted to the success of all NKU students.

All Latino students entering NKU are encouraged to take advantage of this program that's designed to help them become better learners and improve their retention rate.

As LAMP Mentee, I can expect:

  • Touchpoints: while "engagement" looks differently for each student, our mentees are expected to attend scheduled appointments with mentors or LSI Director. In order to develop a deep connection with the program, touchpoints will be scheduled regularly and in different modes to meet schedule needs.
  • Academic Support: navigating your first year of college can be exciting
and challenging. Our mentors will ensure you are connected with the resources to ensure you maximize your academic performance and growth.
  • Familia: with a 4-5% Latinx enrollment at NKU, affirming and validating spaces can be very important. LSI aims to foster a sense of familiarity in experiences, love for coffee or pan dulce, and creating a sense of community within LAMP.
  • Development: LAMP will provide opportunities for your growth while supporting you and connecting you to opportunities on campus or in the community. You determine your development path: public speaking, student organizations, collaborations with LSI or other partners, serving the community, etc.
  • Individualized Support: reminders about class registration, support with
financial aid applications, technology issues, etc. If we don't know the answer, we will make sure we connect you with the right person at NKU.
