The Latinos Avanzando Mentorship Program (LAMP) was created to promote and enhance the retention and academic success of incoming freshmen and transfer students at NKU and to build leadership skills among upperclassmen. It is designed to provide Latino students at NKU with a support system comprised of fellow students, faculty, staff, and employees of local organizations with the purpose of improving retention, encouraging career exploration, and providing exposure to local businesses. The ultimate goal of LAMP is to help students achieve academic and social success at Northern Kentucky University and beyond.
LAMP is coordinated by the Director of Latino Student Initiatives, Tiburcio Lince, and Student Affairs. In addition, there are Head Peer Mentors who assist in the success of the program. Each Head Peer Mentor is assigned a group of mentors/mentees and they work in collaboration to ensure the academic success of all students involved in the LAMP program. Mentors and mentees meet at least once a month to provide support and guidance. Events are created throughout the semester to help students grow socially, academically, and to help them prepare for their future career options and success.
Please keep in mind that you don't have to belong to a specific ethnic group/minority to participate. The program is devoted to the success of all NKU students.
All Latino students entering NKU are encouraged to take advantage of this program that's designed to help them become better learners and improve their retention rate.
The Office of Latino Student Initiatives is officially opening the 2023-2024 Latinos Avanzando Mentorship Program enrollment! We are excited to have 8 mentors who can support you during you first-year journey here at NKU! We have an open enrollment so you can join at any time!

Students who join LAMP will participate in a year-long experience where they will receive mentorship and access to opportunities to ensure academic, social, and personal success. Additionally, LAMP students will join a support system of faculty, staff, students, and community members. LSI is also expanding a network with community partners to have community service and possible job opportunities!
The LAMP is a year long program for first year students. It typically starts with initial contact from the Office of Latino Student Initiatives in August and mentors begin connecting with peers on the first part of the semester. When the LAMP Orientation is offered, it will start a week before school starts during the Early Move In programs.
LAMP students will spend time building community with other LAMP participants, getting to know LAMP mentors, and preparing for a successful first year of college! Students will meet with NKU faculty and staff to learn more about their program of study and learn how to get involved in student organizations.
Students participating in the LAMP Orientation will receive an email with a list of planned activities.
No, LAMP is open to all commuter and residential students.
Detailed schedules will be sent to all participants towards the start of each fall semester.
The days between the end of orientation and when classes begin, students are encouraged to relax, prepare for new student orientation, and get ready for their first day of classes. LAMP students will join all incoming students for the NKU Orientation. ALL students are required to participate in the mandatory orientation for incoming freshmen.
