Subject: Direct Admit Program

Dear Colleagues,

Earlier this year, we announced the creation of our new Direct Admit Program and I am excited to share that this fall semester, we have begun to implement this groundbreaking and barrier-lifting project.

The program offers a simplified, seamless admissions process to the university. This forward-thinking program has garnered a lot of buzz across the Tri-State and we wanted to provide the campus community with an overview of the process should family, friends and community members ask you about this exciting program.

What is the Direct Admit Program?

The Direct Admit Program provides conditional admission for qualified undergraduate students who have an unofficial high school GPA at or above a 2.75 (unweighted), thus meeting the current academic admissions standards established by the university.

What qualifies a student for Direct Admit?

  • Students must be a high school senior with a GPA of 2.75 or above (unweighted)
  • Students must be a first-time, new freshman
  • Students must be residents of the United States

How does Direct Admit work?

The Direct Admit Program eliminates the traditional application and application fee for prospective undergraduate students. Starting this fall, eligible high school seniors from Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana will receive an email from NKU informing them they have been directly admitted into the university. Final admission into NKU will still be determined by a final high school transcript, similar to our current practices for admissions.

Students from outside these regions with a high school GPA at or above a 2.75 can still be directly admitted into the university.

Moreover, undergraduate students with a high school GPA between a 2.0 – 2.749 can still be admitted in accordance with our current academic admissions standards. These students will submit a new abbreviated application for consideration for admission.

What is important to note is the established NKU academic admissions standards will remain in place for the Direct Admit Program; the university is neither waiving these academic standards nor becoming an open-access institution.

Why introduce the Direct Admit Program now?

In reviewing the traditional admissions process across the higher education landscape, including our own, we determined it was time to bring the process into the 21st century. The application itself can be complex and time-consuming, and the application fee can often serve as an impediment for college consideration. Also, some students are not aware they qualify for admission, so this process will ideally engage students who may not have been considering college. By enhancing the accessibility and efficiency of our admissions process we are further demonstrating what it means to be a student-focused university.

We invite you to attend the Direct Admit open forums on campus:

  • Monday, August 26, 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. in SU 109
  • Tuesday, September 3, noon – 1:00 p.m. in SU 104
