The Office of Latino Student Initiatives is committed to uplifting Latinx voices via affirmation with culturally responsive student support; celebration of the diverse Latinx experience at NKU; and education through an asset-minded approach while fostering a sense of belonging, academic success, and promotion of intercultural understanding.
For the Spring 2023 semester, Latino Student Initiatives has created a series of programs that embody the spirit of our mission involving students, university, and community stakeholders. Stolen Education is a great example of the intentionality in our programming. In partnership with the Institute for Talent Development and Gifted Studies and the College of Education, Latino Student Initiatives will be hosting an event that involves students, university, and community partners through a conversation regarding education policy impact on vulnerable communities. The planning was led by the Director of the Institute for Talent Development and Gifted Studies, Dr. Kimberly Clayton-Code; the Director of Experiential Education and Clinical Placement, Joetta Browning; and Director of Latino Student Initiatives, Tiburcio Lince. The planning included embedding key concepts and learning objectives in courses, engaging education thought-leaders, and in-classroom conversations and discussion.
The Stolen Education program will be held on March 13, 2023, from 4:00p - 6:00p in the Eva G. Farris Auditorium (MEP 200). For more information, please visit the Latino Student Initiatives website.
My name is Alejandro Villaseñor and I'm a first-generation college student who came to the United States when I was 13. I started at NKU in Fall 2019. Even though I was undecided about what I wanted to study, I didn't let that stop me from continuing to pursue my dream of getting a degree and making my family proud of how far I could get. I never got involved with any organizations or clubs, until a staff member at NKU from the Center for Student Inclusiveness talked to me about LAMP. I am now the current president of Latinos Avanzando Mentorship Program (LAMP) and The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC). Being a part of these organizations has allowed me to grow as a person and find people who empower me to achieve in my academics and continue to pursue my degree. After being isolated due to COVID, I decided to get more involved and became active in organizations across campus, including LULAC, Leadership Mentors, PICK STEM, IEEE, Orientation Leaders, and became a Research Assistant in Engineering. This involvement has opened a lot of opportunities for me and made me feel more like a leader. I am grateful for the support all around me. Although graduation is just around the corner, I am prepared to get out into the world and do my best in life.
The Center for Student Engagement hopes you enjoyed your Winter Break and that you're ready to jump into an event-filled semester!

The Office of LGBTQA+ Student Initiatives in the Center for Student Inclusiveness hosted its end of the semester celebration honoring LGBTQA+ graduates with Lavender Graduation on December 13, 2022 in University Center Ballroom. Lavender Graduation is an annual ceremony conducted on numerous campuses around the country to honor lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and ally students, acknowledging their achievements and contributions to their school.
The ceremony consisted of a PowerPoint honoring each graduate individually, speeches by Dr. Ashish Vaidya, President of NKU, Dr. Eddie Howard, Vice President of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, Mrs. Olivia Moragne-Scott, Associate Director of Alumni Engagement, Mx. James Renton, President of Friends of Dorothy, and Mr. Daniel Myers, President of Student Government Association, and a donning of cords and stoles on the graduates by Dr. LaVette Burnette, Director of LGBTQA+ Student Initiatives and Dr. Kinsey Bryant-Lees, President of S.A.F.E.
There were six graduates honored at the ceremony:
The event was attended by 35 supportive faculty, staff, and students to honor the graduate’s academic and co-curricular NKU achievements. The support of QPLUS Scholars, peers, faculty, and staff members throughout the graduates’ college careers was integral to their success, and a portion of each graduate’s PowerPoint slide was dedicated to thanking some specific members of the NKU community who helped the graduate along their journeys at NKU. Lavender Graduation exemplifies LGBTQA+ Student Initiatives goals to welcome, support, and see each student on the gender and sexuality spectrum. We honor and celebrate the importance of community, love, and acceptance, and the atmosphere of that evening encompassed all three. Visit page 7 of this newsletter for a photo album from the event.
African American Student Initiatives had a successful closing to the Fall semester and is looking forward to bringing more this Spring semester!
Highlights from Fall events are below.
Roundtable
AASI and Norse Violence Prevention concluded their Roundtable Discussion series with the last session focused on Perceptions of Prevention in December. Students were able to actively engage one another while reflecting on their own lived experiences. Roundtable discussions are intended to provide a safe space for Black students and faculty/staff to discuss issues of interpersonal violence and prevention.
NKU R.O.C.K.S. End of Semester Celebration
NKU R.O.C.K.S. ended the semester on a high note with an End of Year Celebration. AmeriCorp Vista, Talitha Edwards, presented all ROCKS families with their semester scores. They accumulated points based on attendance at 1-on-1 meetings, ROCKS meetings, and other involvement. Everyone was able to leave with prizes sponsored by various NKU departments and programs. The family with the highest amount of points received priority for tickets to Cincinnati REDS FEST! ROCKS President, Bry Hall, was able to get tickets through her connections in the Northern Kentucky/Greater Cincinnati community. We are extremely proud of the 2022-23 cohort! They are very involved and take care of business in the classroom.
Feast for Finals
AASI teamed up with the Residence Hall Association (RHA) and National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) for a successful Feast for Finals. The event had over 400 in attendance who enjoyed the traditional late-night breakfast, served by NKU faculty and staff. We had live music by DJ Pretty Boy Troy, who created an inclusive atmosphere for students from various cultures. We can't forget about holiday-themed activities such as ornament decorating and Christmas bingo, allowing students the opportunity to have items as takeaways.
To see pictures from some of these events, please see the picture album on page 7 of this newsletter.
African American Student Initiatives is excited to announce a few upcoming events for Black History Month.
Bert & Det Genius Potential: Epic Rap Battles of Black History
Bert & Det produce three skits/emcee battles highlighting contrasting views of famous historical African American men and women. Their viewpoints are highlighted through rap battles encapsulating their competing ideals. This program covers the past, present and future destiny of African American leaders. At the end of each emcee battle, Bert & Det deep dive into the historical backstories behind the captivating lyrics and engage the students in interactive trivia and dialogue.
Karyn Parsons
We are excited to welcome Ms. Karyn Parsons, who will be joining us in honor of Black History Month. She will give a candid talk about her storied career as an actress, author, and business owner. Parsons is founder and owner of Sweet Blackberry, a company that focuses on creating books and media that teach African American history to children.
Tickets can be obtained on the event website. NKU Students get free admission using code NKUSTUFREE.
The Veterans Resource Station was awarded funding from the Kentucky Veterans Trust Fund to launch a Green Zone Brigade (GZB) Day at NKU. The specific purpose of the Military Affiliated and Veteran awareness, educate, and connection day (or GZB Day) is to showcase our mission as the NKY Veteran Hub and provide resources to our students, faculty, staff, and the community. The GZB Day will highlight our GZB program, but will also allow easy identification of our 116 (and growing) trained Faculty & Staff to provide resources, support, and be an advocate for our Military Affiliated (MA) and Veteran community. Please look for more information to be released in the coming weeks. To learn more about the GZB or to sign up for a future class, please visit our website.
The Veterans Resource Station was also awarded a second grant from the Placemaking Project, allowing them to start "Vets on Mics." The purpose of "Vets on Mics" is to provide an opportunity for military members, veterans, and their family members to share stories about the military connected life and to bridge the growing military-civilian divide through storytelling. A secondary goal and result is to allow for healing to occur for our military connected individuals by sharing their adventures. Look for these pop-up performances around campus and in the community to begin March 2023.
Student Wellness wants to help you have a healthy and happy new year. Look for wellness tips in the Student Affairs and Enrollment Management newsletter monthly. This month, we are focusing on how to effectively cut calories without starving yourself.
myfitnesspal recently produced a blog post that has wonderful detail on effectively cutting calories. One of the big things to remember about cutting calories is that you shouldn't cut them too low. Doing so will "slow the metabolism and cause the body to not want to let go of fat stores because it believes it's in a 'starvation state.'" The optimal amount of calories to cut, according to nutrition experts is "about 500 calories per day if your goal is fat loss."
The best ways to cut calories is to cut garbage calories, use vegetables to fill gaps, and swap low-fiber foods for high-fiber foods. To learn more and link to research and more information, you can read the blog post on myfitnesspal.com.
