NKU Community Care Team: Northern Kentucky University, Greater Cincinnati Region

The NKU Community Care Team, formerly the Students of Concern Committee, is the behavioral intervention team for the Northern Kentucky University and is interdisciplinary in its makeup. The NKU Community Care Team members provide guidance to the Dean of Students staff on reports received related to students experiencing academically or socially disruptive situations and concerns. The NKU Community Care Team meets regularly during the academic year to provide guidance to Dean of Students staff on these reports and to advance collaborative solutions for the NKU campus community.

The NKU Community Care Team is charged with:

Maintaining a safe campus environment that is conducive to student success while balancing its concern for individual students
Use reasonable discretion, based on a record of relevant materials, in order to make informed decisions that are in the best interest of the student(s) involved and the NKU campus community
Promote greater engagement of the University community with efforts to report and advocate for students in need of NKU community support

MILD RISK: No intimidation or threat made or present / Concerning symptoms or behavior = mild

Signs/Symptoms

Disruptive behavior (talking or texting during lectures/exames)
Changes in academic performance in the classroom:
- Assignments turned in late, significant drop in exam scores, etc.
- Changes in pattern of interaction and/or less participation in class
- Increased irritability when talking and/or confrontational behavior
Changes in physical appearance/deterioration of personal hygiene/major clothing style changes
Repeated requests for special consideration
Problems focusing, remembering things, or making decisions

Recommended Actions

Meet with student and address your observations
Provide student with campus resources (i.e. Counseling Services, Office for Student Accessibility, FUEL NKU)
Complete UCAP alert/NKU Community Care referral, if appropriate
Consult with Chair/Supervisor

MODERATE RISK: Intimidation/threats are vague, indirect, implausible / Concerning symptoms or behavior = moderate

Signs/Symptoms

Persistence and/or escalation of mild risk behaviors listed above
Unusual or exaggerated emotional responses:
- Outbursts of anger and/or persistent sadness or unexplained crying
- High level or consistent irritability or inappropriate excitement

Recommended Actions

Refer to NKU Community Care Team online
Walk student to Counseling Services (if student is willing and during business hours)
Contact NKU Police to connect with an on-call counselor (if student is willing, after business hours)

ELEVATED RISK: Threats made or present / Concerning symptoms or behaviors = highly intensified

Signs/Symptoms

Any expressions related to death
Irrational conversation or speech
Suspiciousness, irrational feelings of persecution, mistreatment or harassment
Loss of contact with reality (seeing/hearing things that aren't there)
Disruptive behavior which is beyond the scope of classroom management:
- Blocks/interferes with access to a facility of the university
- Conducts self in a manner that adversely affects own safety or safety of others
- Participates in or incites others to violent behavior such as assault/physical abuse or threatens physical abuse
- Steals or knowingly in possession of stolen property belonging to university, other students, university employees or guests
- Loud, vulgar or abusive language or any form of behavior acted out for the purpose of inciting others to disruptive behavior
Behavior that is destructive of property
Highly agitated, loud or showing symptoms of drug and/or alcohol abuse

Recommended Actions

Immediately notify 911 or x7777 (if you feel it is an emergency)
Immediately contact NKU Community Care Team (x5417, if during business hours)
After immediate resolution, refer to NKU Community Care Team online
