Britta Gibson

Associate Director, International Admissions

"Rebecca's unquestionable dedication to supporting international students from recruitment through graduation is driven by her belief that empathy and kindness work in tandem with knowledge and training. I've worked closely with Rebecca to assist several students who have struggled with roadblocks beyond the norm because of the pandemic, and her counsel, knowledge, and compassion inspire me every time. I've learned so much from her, and have never seen her genuine dedication waver an inch."

"Whether you're a staff member wanting to get a degree (like me!), a student wanting to do hands-on research in their field of study or faculty member wanting to lead a study abroad experience for their students, the opportunity is there for you at NKU."

What is your favorite thing about NKU?
My favorite thing about NKU is the collaborative nature. I frequently find myself working with colleagues all over campus, whether for a major project or just to resolve a situation with a single student.

Where is your favorite spot on campus? What makes that spot so special?
My favorite spot on campus is the little nook just off to the side of Starbucks in the Student Union. Every Wednesday is an open invitation for international students to meet there and catch up, so when I see that spot I'm reminded of the many conversations I've had with my students. I don't get to go every Wednesday, but when I get a chance it's always a treat to learn what they're up to and cheer them on.

What’s the first word that comes to mind when you think about NKU?
When I think about NKU, the first word that comes to mind is opportunity. Whether you're a staff member wanting to get a degree (like me!), a student wanting to do hands-on research in their field of study or faculty member wanting to lead a study abroad experience for their students, the opportunity is there for you at NKU.

What is your favorite way to spend your free time?
Free time? What's free time?! All jokes aside, I'm very close to finishing an MA in Integrative Studies and will have a bit more free time soon enough. When I get some time for myself I love traveling, experimenting with new cocktail recipes, going to the symphony with my husband, pretending I'm proficient at yoga and snuggling with my two dogs.

What is your greatest passion?
My greatest passion is exploring different cultures. Between my job and my personal travel, I've had the opportunity to visit 50+ countries—and I still have plenty to see. Each new place is a chance to step outside of my comfort zone and explore a different perspective. Each return visit allows me to dig deeper into local customs and absorb the nuance in every interaction. These experiences have helped me to better understand our international students and more effectively advocate for their needs. It has also made me a more curious person; the more I learn the more I realize how little I know, and this continues to drive me to ask more questions and soak in the experiences.
