Melanie Hartzel

Lecturer, Nursing

"Professor Nordheim has made a huge impact on mine and countless of my classmates' nursing education. She truly cares about each and every one of her students and helping them to succeed. She is always willing to meet with her students one on one and help us discover new ways to study and learn. Finally, she cares about us as individuals. She was so excited talking to me about all my extracurriculars and passions, which made me feel incredible. She deserves to be recognized for all she does! "

"Being part of an organization that impacts the lives of students has brought me the greatest joy and is my favorite thing about working at NKU."

What is your favorite thing about NKU?
Being a first-generation college graduate myself, I quickly learned how a quality education can change the trajectory of someone’s life. Being part of an organization that impacts the lives of students has brought me the greatest joy and is my favorite thing about working at NKU.

Where is your favorite spot on campus? What makes that spot so special?
I attended NKU for my undergraduate nursing degree from 1985-88, so when I walk throughout campus I am reminded of events that shaped my life. Whether it was going to the Campus Recreation Center for group fitness classes or taking late night walks on campus with my Delta Zeta Sorority sisters, fitness has been an integral part of my life. I also have fond memories of living in the D wing dorms on campus, and the friendships I developed and still have today because of this experience. However, my favorite spot on campus is the University Center Otto Budig Theatre. It was where I was crowned NKU’s Homecoming Queen in 1988. This honor meant so much to me because it was voted on by the student body, and it reflects how you interact with your peers and others on campus.

What’s the first word that comes to mind when you think about NKU?
Excellence! Everyone at NKU strives for excellence inside and outside of the classroom so that when our students graduate, they are equipped to handle this rapidly changing, multicultural world. I am so extremely proud of the graduates NKU produces.

What is your favorite way to spend your free time?
There is nothing better than a walk with my dog, Lexi. I have a circle of close girlfriends that I meet throughout the week to walk in different neighborhoods in northern Kentucky. Whether it is sunny or snowy, I find it relaxing to be outside.

What is your greatest passion?
I am passionate about education, fitness and traveling. However, my greatest passion has been raising three wonderful sons. My oldest son, Jacob, graduated from NKU in 2020 and is now working on robotic arms in Los Angeles. Luke and Max are currently studying Information Technology at NKU, and both sons are involved in fraternity life on campus as well.

Tell us anything else about yourself and/or NKU that you want folks to know.
As a nurse, you impact the lives of your patient and their families. As an educator, you impact the lives of your students. As a community advocate, you attempt to make positive change in the lives of people in your community. I served my community on the Pendleton County School Board from 2013-18. I am running for magistrate district 2 in the May primary. My blog for this election is https://electshawn.blogspot.com. My objective as magistrate is to improve the lives and health of all Pendleton County citizens.
