Challenge and Change (EDUCAUSE Review, vol. 47, no. 5) September/October 2012

George Mehaffy (2012) discusses disruptive innovation for higher education.  With a university model designed in the 11th century; the proliferation of confusing missions; the decline in state funding; increases in tuition that are unsustainable; a structural business model that depends on the revenues of lower division courses to support the costs of upper division and graduate courses; and student loan debt that exceeds credit card debt, Mehaffy posits that traditional higher education is facing disruption and may soon be radically reshaped by competitors using new technologies.

Several elite institutions, such as Stanford, Harvard, and Duke, are offering free online courses to students numbering in the thousands from across the world.  Currently, there is little opportunity for obtaining credit for these courses, although it appears to be evolving in that direction.
