Step 1: Consult with the Education Service Officer or Counselor (Active Duty/Reservist Only)

Seek approval from your Education Service Officer, military counselor, or Service. If an eligible Service member seeks to use Tuition Assistance (TA), NKU may only enroll an eligible Service member after the TA is approved by the individual’s Service.

Step 2: Provide the Following to the Veterans Resource Station

Please bring in or email to veterans@nku.edu your Certificate of Eligibility (COE) or the Notice of Basic Eligibility (NOBE).

Step 3: Apply for V.A. Education Benefits

New Application: Online at https://www.ebenefits.va.gov (print a copy of the application, either 22-1990, 22-1990e, or 22-5490).
If you have used your benefits elsewhere: Fill out VA form 22-1995 or VA form 22-5495 to change your place of study with the VA at https://www.va.gov/education/how-to-apply/
Print and provide a copy of the online VA form to the VA Office.

Step 4: Get admitted to NKU

Step 5: Transfer Credits

Complete a JST (Joint Service Transcript) request HERE for Air Force Transcripts, visit HERE.
Provide an unofficial copy of your transcript for review with an advisor.

Step 6: Apply for Financial Aid

Visit FAFSA by clicking HERE and use the school code: 009275

Step 7: Take the Placement Test

Step 8: Register/Attend an Orientation Session

Cost is $100 paid via student portal
NKU has several sessions each semester just for veterans.

Step 9: Consult an Academic Advisor

For curriculum and/or class schedule call 859-572-6900

Step 10: Register for classes

Enrollment Window: Active Duty, Guard, Reserves, veterans and family members (on VA or KDVA benefits) receive super priority registration. Please email veterans@nku.edu with proper documentation for approval (ID card, Certificate of Eligibility, Kentucky Tuition Waiver, etc.).

Step 11: Fill out your Semester Enrollment Certification Request (SECR) and (if using) Tuition Assistance

Complete Every Semester to Notify School Certifying Official you are taking classes this term.

Requesting Benefits using ArmyIgnited

Step 1: Determine if you need to complete one or both forms.

If you are enrolled in a Spring 2022 semester and are planning to use ArmyignitED
- Complete this form: Service - Spring 2022 VA Certification (nku.edu)

Step 2: Completing the form at least 2 weeks prior to the start of the course *.

Complete the following fields

Undergrad or Grad?
Are you enrolled in courses?
Which benefit are you wanting to use? (Select all that apply)

Only choose ArmyIgnited Tuition Assistance (TA) if that is the only one you can use.

Step 3: What we will do.

We will upload any required information/documentation required by ArmyignitED. Which can include:
- Semester enrollment
- Degree plans
- Academic History
We will notify you once this has been completed. (Can take 3 to 5 business days)
- Please be aware that if we receive this after the start of a course, you may not be able to use TA for the course.

Step 4: After you received our notification email

Log into your ArmyignitED account and request the TA for all or select courses.
If you do not see the courses that you are enrolled in, please contact us at veterns@nku.edu as soon as possible.

Step 13: Pay tuition not later than due date if less than 100% entitlement and/or if using Federal Tuition Assistance.

Ensure that you have visited or call (859-572-7867) the VRS office for information before making a tuition payment.
You have reviewed the tuition rates for Instate, Metro, or Out of State etc.
You have reviewed the payment options.
