Seeking a co-op, internship or full-time professional position . . .

The job search, whether you are seeking a co-op, internship or full-time professional position after graduation, is a time consuming process that requires a strong commitment on your part. Some would even say that finding a job is a full-time job. If you are like most students, you already have numerous constraints on your time, so to help ensure your success, you will need to take a planned, strategic approach to your job search.

Keep in mind that NKU graduates are held in high regard by employers. Our experience indicates that students who have utilized Career Services since the beginning of their college careers are the most successful in the job-search process.

How to Start

You should begin with an assessment of your interests, skills, work values, and career goals. Then you will need to research professional fields and opportunities that match the results of your assessment to help you begin to focus your job search. The next step is to develop professional job searching skills. Once these skills are acquired, you can begin to pursue specific opportunities.

How We Can Help: Career Advising, Workshops, Publications

Our career advisors can assist you with narrowing the scope of your search and developing your job search skills, including writing resumes and job search correspondence; learning employment interview techniques; developing networking strategies, and identifying employment resources.  Each semester, we offer a series of campus-wide workshops on these topics as well.  Click “Programs/Events” for a list of programs this semester.  We also have guides and handouts related to the job search, including guidelines for professional dress, available in our Career Library.  Links to PDF versions of these publications and handouts are also provided above.

Sources of Employment: Handshake (formerly HireNKU), Internet Resources

Each year hundreds of businesses, industries, and non-profit organizations actively seek employees through Career Services via a database called Handshake, which is accessible 24/7.  All NKU students and alumni have access to the Handshake network!  Handshake currently houses information on more than 200,000 organizations and contains 2,000+ active job postings.  Log in today to complete your profile, upload your resume and other job-search documents, research companies, and search for and apply to jobs in the database.  Click the “Handshake (formerly HireNKU)” link on the left menu for more details and to login.

Another good place to gather career information and potential job leads is What Can I Do With This Major,” an online resource that not only connects majors to careers, but also provides website links for each major with both career information and in many cases job postings.

You can find many other employment databases on the Internet, but finding relevant sites can be overwhelming. We have done some of the work for you and developed a wide range of Internet Resources that are general or field/interest specific.

On-Campus Interviews, Career Fairs and Events

A number of employers choose to conduct on-campus interviews with students in Career Services or attend sponsored career fairs and networking events in search of potential employees. You can log into Handshake (formerly HireNKU) to sign up for on-campus interviews and to learn about career fairs and other events.  Click “Programs/Events” for details on workshops and events.
