Business Competency Testing

Northern Kentucky University offers its students the ability to show competency in BIS 101 - Fundamentals of Business Computing. If a student passes the competency test, than they may "place out" of BIS 101 and move to the next course in the sequence.

 

Registration

The fee for registering for the Business Competency Test is $17 and is offered Monday - Friday, at various times. If you wish to reschedule, you may do so without a charge 7 days prior to your scheduled test date. If you reschedule after the 7-day grace period, you must register and pay the fee again.

On the day of the test, the examinee must pay McGraw Hill a $70 fee to complete the exam.

BIS 101- Fundamentals of Business Computing

Course Description

Understanding the basic concepts of informatics in a context including computer technology; examination of hardware and software; impact computers have on society including employment, privacy, ethics, and security; working with information as a resource. The course includes computer laboratory exercise in Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access) and Internet technology applications.


 

Test Information

This assessment draws from the practices of the course's current material. The assessment will utilize various methods to assess prior learning, including simulation-based assignments,  multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, ranking & ordering, and true/false questions. These methods evaluate an individual's college-level knowledge and skills, allowing them to progress more quickly toward a degree. This assessment will recognize and validate learning acquired outside NKU's BIS 101 course. However, prior learning may include only some of the four parts of the assessment. The assessment is broken down into 4 sections: Computer Concepts, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Students will have a total of 210 minutes (3.5 hours) to complete all sections. 

A score of 75% is considered passing.
