Mission Statement

Northern Kentucky University’s Digital Repository is the institution’s online location to collect, organize, and provide open access to the scholarly and creative works authored by NKU students, faculty, and staff; the permanent university record; and the history and culture of the Northern Kentucky region.

Collection Description

The NKU Digital Repository provides worldwide open access to the creative output, scholarship, and research of NKU students, faculty, and staff. This range of work includes, but is not limited to:

  • Student research and creative output including theses, dissertations, or alternate scholarship accepted in lieu of a thesis or dissertation for completion of a masters or doctoral level degree; student publications like the student newspaper The Northerner (1970-2006); and campus journals that include student work such as the Journal of Kentucky Studies and Nýsa
  • Staff and faculty scholarship, including open access journal articles and pre-prints, campus journals, book chapters, technical reports, white papers, conference presentations, posters, and research colloquia proceedings, and open educational materials, such as textbooks, learning modules, and lectures.
  • University records and historical materials from Special Collections and University Archives.

The NKU Digital Repository can host born-digital and digitized materials in a variety of formats, including handwritten or typescript documents, journal articles, still images (photographs, art, maps, and illustrations), audio recordings, and moving image/film. Analog formats will require conversion or digitization for acceptance into the Digital Repository. The Digital Repository holds access copies only. For materials contributed by Special Collections & University Archives, a preservation copy will also be maintained. Digital Repository submissions must meet web accessibility requirements as defined in the NKU Digital Accessibility policy. For questions regarding acceptable file formats, contact dspace@nku.edu

Collection Scope

To be considered for inclusion in the NKU Digital Repository, submissions must be from current or former NKU students, faculty, or staff. These submissions must contain original scholarship or other creative work. The submitter should own the copyright to their submitted work or have the publisher’s permission to distribute the work via the Digital Repository. The submitted work must not infringe on the copyright or intellectual property rights of others. The library reserves the right to refuse submissions that infringe on these rights.

The NKU Digital Repository also contains some permanent university records (as determined by the State University Model Records Retention Schedule) that have high research value or otherwise require digital access copies as determined by Special Collections & University Archives. Other materials held in Special Collections & University Archives may be included in the Digital Repository if they are unique, exhibit high research value, or are regularly used.

Rights Management

The NKU Digital Repository Nonexclusive License Agreement

Authors must review and sign a Digital Repository Nonexclusive License Agreement when submitting a work to the NKU Digital Repository. The agreement form can be reviewed publicly on the NKU Digital Repository homepage and is made available to authors at the time of submission.

This Nonexclusive License Agreement grants certain rights to NKU and its affiliates which allows the work to be made accessible in perpetuity, but it in no way authorizes NKU to make substantive content changes to the work.

Authors’ Rights Under the Nonexclusive License

The author retains the copyright to their work and is free as the copyright holder to make other nonexclusive uses of their work.

Upon submission, the author has the right to request a temporary delay (an “embargo”) to their work becoming open access for up to one year with additional time considered on a case-by-case basis. When an item is embargoed, the record, including the title, author, and abstract, is available to the public, but the file is restricted from view.

Access Policy

The NKU Digital Repositoryprovides worldwide access to its contents for the public. Unless otherwise specified in a record, all material is freely available to view, download, and print.

Withdrawal Policy

Materials deposited into the NKU Digital Repository are held in perpetuity. NKU reserves the right to remove or otherwise disable a material from the Digital Repository when required by NKU’s General Counsel or when it is determined that a submission infringes on copyright or other intellectual rights of someone other than the submitter.
