Our Fall 2024 timeline is designed to give you a timeline of our housing application process.  

• December 1 – Fall 2024 Housing Application Opens for all Current and Incoming Students  
• January 9 – Housing Renewal Event  
• January 16 – Retainter Consideration Closes for Current Residents
• February 1 – Room Selection Portal Opens for All Students with confirmed contracts  
• May 31 – Last day to cancel the housing contract without any cancellation charges
• June 1 – Housing cancellation fees apply  
• June 30 - Last Day to select your housing space
• July 1 - Room selection portal closes for all students 
• July 15 (approx) - Fall 2024 Tuition, Room and Board Charges Applied to Student Account  
• August 15 – University Housing Move-In Day 

All first-year students who live outside of the exempt area and do not live with their parent or legal guardian and are under the age of 21 years by September 1 of the academic year are required to live in University Housing for their first academic year.  

• Students who are married, divorced, or widowed;  
• Who have parental custodial responsibilities; who have served 6-months in the armed forces; who are enrolled in fewer than 6 credit hours (part-time status); or  
• Who are attending a university learning center are also exempt from this residency requirement. 

It is highly encouraged that incoming first-year students review the first-year residency requirement by going to the First-Year Residence Requirement webpage. 

Students are responsible for understanding this information and following this university requirement or will be subject to additional cancellation and other housing fees.   

Residential students will have the opportunity to select their own roommates and room spaces. Below are important dates to remember for the room selection process.   

• February 1 – Room selection portal opens for all New Incoming First-Year and Transfer Students 
• July 1 – Room selection portal closes for all students  

For Incoming First Year Students, Housing will send out information in late January 2024 about how you can select your room space for the next academic year.  

For our current/returning students, Housing will send out information about how you can select an upper division housing space for next year.  Current residents living in the New Hall and Kentucky Hall are not eligible to retain their room for next year and will need to choose between Norse Hall, University Suites, and Callahan Hall.  

During the winter break period, students living in Norse Hall, Callahan Hall, and University Suites will be allowed to stay on-campus during the winter break period.  Any student living on-campus during the winter break period will be required to pay the winter break fee.  Winter Break fees are determined and are subject to approval by the NKU Board of Regents. 

Students who have signed the fall-to-fall contract living in Norse Hall will not be charged the winter break fee.  For all other students living in Norse Hall who have signed the fall-to-fall contract will be charged the winter break fee.  

For all other students will need to vacate their residence hall space and make alternate arrangements during the Winter 2024 break period.

The terms of the Housing Contract begin when a student is admitted to Northern Kentucky University and continues until the residence halls close at the end of the spring semester; unless cancelled by NKU or the student prior to check-in, cancelled by breach, termination by University Housing in accordance with this Housing Contract or by an approved Housing Contract Cancellation after check-in (see Schedule of Charges and Deadlines for valid reasons for Housing Contract Cancellation). Exceptions or changes to this Housing Contract are not valid unless the Director of University Housing or their designee has confirmed them in writing.
