ADMINISTRATIVE/BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Grant County Schools is located in Grant County, Kentucky. During the period of these records (1885-1930), the county was divided into many school districts, and was segregated into white and colored districts. The districts, each with their own board of trustees, reported to a county superintendent.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

Series I, School Census Records (1894-1930), contains school census records from 1894-1920 and from 1922 to 1930 for both white and colored schools in Grant County, Kentucky. These lists, recorded by district, give the names of parents as well as the names of children between six and twenty years of age, their race, sex, date of birth, and age. The census records also include categories for marriage status of child, address, and parent or legal guardian signature.

Series II, Superintendent Reports (1885-1921), contains superintendent reports from 1885-1890, 1902-1905, 1913-1915, 1915-1917, and 1919-1921. The reports include the annual settlement by the county superintendent for state school funds; the record of applicants for common school graduation diplomas; monthly reports and salaries of teachers at both white and colored schools; and the record of applicants for certificates to teach, including the date their certificate was issued and the date it expired. Inlaid throughout the report books are a few teacher’s contracts.

Series III, Monthly Reports of Teachers (1885-1898), contains reports by teachers that were submitted to the district trustees and superintendent at the end of each month. The reports record the number of pupils enrolled during the month, daily attendance, average standing in various school subjects (e.g. writing and geography), and other classroom statistics. Some reports include notations about the salary paid to the teacher based on their report.

Series IV, Other School Records (1893-1915), contains publishers’ bonds for school books that list the prices of textbooks (1893-1894); election returns for school trustees by district (1894-1897); applications for the teacher certification test (1896-1897); and annual reports of the Chairman of the Board of Trustees (1894-1897). The annual reports include information on number of students per grade, the number of books in the district libraries, school construction, and financial information. The series also contains orders and receipts for school supplies (1893-1904) and orders of levy (1894-1900). Mixed in with the orders and receipts are letters of resignation from trustees (1896-1897). There are also treasurer’s reports (1894-1901) and a Grant County Board of Education record book (1913-1915) that contains lists of disbursements and receipts as well as lists of subdistrict trustees with their name, address, subdistrict number, date of election, date when sworn in, date of term expiration, and role if chairman or secretary. There are also two original document storage boxes that were used to house the tri-folded records.
