SCOPE AND CONTENT:

The collection contains a draft manuscript from around March 2009 in electronic form for Leaving Children Behind: Black Education in Covington, Kentucky and a typescript paper draft from around November 2009 that was the final draft before edits (spelling and grammar) for publication purposes.

The collection also includes handwritten transcripts for three oral history interviews that Hampton conducted with African American residents of Covington. Hampton used information from the interviews with Mr. James Brock, Dr. Joseph Gastright, a former Covington school board member, and Ms. LaRita Jamar in his book. Interviews discuss school life for African American children during the 1950s and 1960s in Covington. Topics include integration, teachers, curricula, school activities, and educational facilities. They mainly focus on Lincoln-Grant School and Holmes High School. Interviewees also share their thoughts on the state of the black community in Covington, both past and present. Transcripts are arranged alphabetically by last name of interviewee.
