ADMINISTRATIVE/BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Matthew Seifried collected the 633 Club gambling chips out of his personal interest in the history of gambling in Newport, Kentucky. His grandfather’s brother, Christian Seifried, was heavily involved in the Social Action Committee’s efforts to reform Newport during the late 1950s and early 1960s. One of the establishments Christian Seifried targeted for reform was the popular 633 Club, also commonly known as the Flamingo Club. Arthur Dennert opened the club in the 1930s at 633 York Street in Newport and the club was later owned by the Levinson brothers (Ed, Louis, and Mike). It ceased gambling operations around 1961.
