Break Housing

All NKU’s Residentials Communities remain open through break periods. In effort to prioritize safety and maximize student support, all students must submit a Winter Break Housing Application. Please note that the information included in the application will be used for emergency situations. Students who do not complete the application will not have access to their residential community through the duration of the break period.

If you plan to leave, complete the following tasks:

  • Pack all essential items (medication, passport, fish, needed electronics, chargers, etc.).
  • Take your ALLCard (you will need this when you return).
  • Clean room/apartment as best as possible.
  • Take all trash to the dumpster.
  • Close and lock all windows and lower the blinds.
  • Remove all perishables from the refrigerator and the room.
  • Unplug everything except for your refrigerator.
  • Put the thermostat on heat at 68 degrees or lowest setting. (Please do not turn off the thermostat.)
  • Turn off all lights.
  • Lock your door(s).
  • If the space is not fully occupied, prepare extra sets of furniture (bed, dresser, desk, etc.) for a new roommate to arrive in January.

Please note that University Housing staff will enter every room to conduct a health and safety check after the building is closed in order to ensure the building is secure.

If you canceled your housing contract and are moving out:

If you are not returning in January, please schedule a checkout appointment with your RA. Checkout appointments are available through Dec. 18 at noon. Your appointment should be within 24 hours of your last final exam or no later than Dec. 18 at noon. Should you not sign up for an appointment during this time period, please reach out to your community office to sign up for your appointment.

Please review the checkout protocol below:

  • In-person checkout: Complete the list below and meet with a staff member during your checkout appointment. The staff member will inspect your space for damages in your presence. Afterwards, the staff member and you will go to the community desk to complete the checkout process.

Please follow these instructions as you prepare to move out:

  • Pack all of your belongings and remove them prior to your checkout appointment
  • Clean the unit
