Northern's main campus is located along US 27, seven miles southeast of Cincinnati, Ohio. Northern's location places it in the largest metropolitan area of all the state universities in Kentucky. Groundbreaking for the Highland Heights campus was March 31, 1971. Open house was held October 29, 1972. Northern's move to the Highland Heights campus was completed basically on schedule in late July, 1972.

The Grant County Center, located in Williamstown, KY, is housed in a building leased from Grant County Foundation for Higher Education. The Grant County Center offers select NKU courses to residents of the area and has offered classes in Williamstown since 1998. The current facility has been in use since August 2004.
