The collection consists of Carl R. Bogardus' compilation of various Ohio River memorabilia and research. The collection contains correspondence, scrapbooks, literary manuscripts, and framed artwork pertaining to Ohio River history. It also has navigational charts and photographs of the Ohio River. A large portion of the collection is dedicated to riverboat and steamboat research. There are hundreds of prints of riverboats identified by their corresponding entry in Frederick Way’s Way’s Packet Directory. The collection also contains a significant amount of newspaper clippings, magazines, and journals.
Carl R. Bogardus was a native of Warsaw, Indiana. He attended the University of Louisville for medical school and graduated in 1930. After practicing medicine for several decades in Austin, Indiana, he returned to Warsaw in 1977 upon retirement. Bogardus was an avid Ohio River history collector, writer, and local historian. He published several books about his historical research and contributed a column titled “Glimpses of the Past” to the weekly Gallatin County News (Kentucky). He passed away in 1992.
