There are different training courses in CITI to choose from for Human Subject research. Please choose the correct learner course that fits your specific research.
Training must be completed every three (3) years (initial and refresher courses) and researchers must achieve an 80% or higher on each course.
Basic Human Participant Research should be chosen if the researcher and faculty advisor (when applicable) is listed on an IRB application and the research DOES NOT include nursing/health professions or elementary/secondary education.
This learner group is required for all IRB application submissions. The four modules in the group are:
College of Health Professions (including nursing), should be chosen if the researcher and faculty advisor (when applicable) are involved in the health profession.
The following two (2) modules will be added to the basic four (4) listed above and all six (6) modules will appear under this learner group link on the CITI main menu page.
The Basic Human Participant Research group does not need to be selected as well.
Prisoner Research should be chosen if the research involves any individual incarcerated or held by the court (probation).
Once the four (4) modules of the Basic Human Participant Research group above has been completed, enter the optional modules link on the main menu page and select the module below completing the five (5) required modules.
Education Graduate: Teacher as Leader should be chosen if any researcher and faculty advisor (when applicable) are involved with elementary and secondary education or minors.
Two (2) additional modules will be added to the basic four (4) listed above and six (6) modules will appear under this learner group link on the CITI main menu page.
Studies that are funded by NIH and meet the NIH definition of a clinical trial are required by NIH to complete Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training. The following seven (7) trainings are required through CITI to meet this requirement. Researchers are also required to complete the four (4) modules required by NKU for all human subjects researchers.
Please note, the CITI training system requires a 100% passing score on the GCP modules.

Human Research Training
CITI training offers a variety of population and study dependent trainings. The list below reflects trainings that may be applicable to research conducted at NKU. While these trainings are not required for all research, the IRB may request that researchers complete certain modules to better prepare them for unique research situations. All researchers have access to these courses through the CITI training system.

Human subjects research training must be refreshed every three (3) years. This can be done in the CITI system. See below for the names of the refresher trainings.
SBE Refresher 2 - History and Ethical Principles
SBE Refresher 2 - Informed Consent
SBE Refresher 2 - Assessing Risk
SBE Refresher 2 - Privacy and Confidentiality
These are study-specific refresher trainings above and beyond the general human subjects training refreshers.
SBE 2 - Research with Prisoners
SBE 2 - Research with Children
SBE 2 - Research in Public Schools
SBE 2 - International Research
Initial human subjects research expires every three (3) years. Researchers can either re-complete the initial training courses listed above or complete the abbreviated (also known as "refreshers") training courses listed below. It is the researcher's responsibility to ensure that all research personnel are current on their CITI training.
